I've worked on many SBCs, and making 400+ horsepower was very hard.
i can do that with a $300 5.3 and an $80 LS3 cam.

When I was in the process of swapping an LQ9 in my C3 I had my old L48 and 3spd on Craigslist. These two 60 something year old guys came over to buy them and noticed the C3. They asked why I took the 350 out for one of those new fuelie motors. They can't be better than a 350. Then said they were going to put my old motor in a 77 Camaro as is and blow the doors off my C3.

Vortec 5300s are actually about $0.30 usually. Then get a free turbo from craiglist (usually you can find GT35Rs for $50, just get two). Add some $5 hockey puck mounts made at Home Depot and you have a 500-800 hp engine that will last 100,000 miles and cost only like $0 - $100. Just make sure to get a good tune from the local tuner (trade him a 24 of budweiser). You might need a few junkyard Volvo intercoolers too but those are like $100 + some clamps. So yeah basically 1200 hp for $50.
