How-do /o/
I've been running my FD daily for about 15 months now. Other than fuel, it's incredible, handles like a dream.. Most of the time.

I'm running 255 tyres on the back, 225 on the front, and I love the stability at the back. The front dives a little on hard corners and will understeer if pushed enough. It becomes particularly apparent on roundabouts etc.

I recently took it on my first autotest. Admittedly the courses were all way too tight for the car, but understeer became a major issue and I was forced to drift the courses to keep any control when entering any of the corners.

So, question time. I know the handling is being ruined by the staggered sizing of the tyres, but I can't afford a pair of dishes to make the fronts wider, nor do I want to downsize the rears.
I'm already running higher pressures in the back and stickier tyres up front. I know there's no true replacement for more rubber, but are spacers going to help improve front grip and prevent the diving? Or am I expecting too much from them?

Just add a rear strut brace if you don't already have one. Or you can make alightment adjustments. Or add a stiffer rear sway bar

An older picture, how she looked when I first imported her. But it shows the issue quite well. Front track is much narrower than the front.

I've never used spacers or widened track in any other way before so I'm not sure what to expect. I was thinking a pair of 20mm spacers, or 25mm if I could get away with it.
>>
>>13991045
do the chalk test and get your pressure up front adjusted

>>
>>13991045
What tires do you have on it?
>>
>>13991076
It comes with front and rear strut braces, but they're pretty much just for show. It's double wishbone suspension, the struts are just to hold the dampers lol.
I'd rather not play with the ARBs until I've sorted the issue caused by aftermarket parts - the staggered wheels.

It does need aligning though. I've given it hell since I got it and never even looked at the geo. Not sure why that hasn't crossed my mind before. Cheers!

>Front track is much narrower than the front.
That's abnormal.
>>
spacers on the front will definitively help
though I'd run smaller tyres overall for muh dynamics
>>
moar neg camber on front
>>
>>13991045
Man up and buy a set of wheels and tires that fit.

>>13991076
>Just add a rear strut brace if you don't already have one.
Won't do anything; FD has double wishbones, not struts.
>Or you can make alightment adjustments.
Probably the best option since he can probably dial in the fronts better
>Or add a stiffer rear sway bar
Same thing as putting smaller tires in the back, it just reduces available traction.

>>13991081
You can try it, but your problem the staggered tires, not the difference in track width.
>>
>>13991121
Oops, front is narrower than the rear*

>>13991105
I recently swapped for my winter set; winter tyres on the front, old summers on the back. Can't remember what I had on the front, rears were a pair of Nexen ditch finders though.
I like Uniroyal Rainsports.

>>13991123
I'm running standard power right now, but expect to be running around 360whp shortly. I like grip.
Plus I like bragging that I have more rubber on the road than an R8..

It must do something. A lot of people do it
>>
>>13991162
A lot of people are ricers. The FD doesn't use the shocks for locating the wheel.
>>
>>13991170
Stiffen the chassis then?
>>
>>13991045
Why don't you buy a front bumper first before you buy tires? It looks like shit right now. Or are you going for that "DUDE JDM TYTE VAPE YO DRIFT LOL STANCE" look?

Why would Mazda brace it from the factory?

What size wheels, OP?

Buy them for me. lol. I've spent about £9k on fuel alone since I bought the car and recently became unemployed. And it's Christmas. And other excuses.

I like the wheels. I'm no wheel whore, but for these I'm making compromises. When I can, I'll get a set of wider dishes for it.

I know spacing the fronts won't cure the issue, but do you think it's going to make much difference at all?

>>13991128
Camber wear on the tyre seems quite even. I've started to delaminate the sidewalls through hard cornering, but the tread wear seems decent enough.

>>13991162
Most cars use mcphereson strut suspension. In that setup, the strut towers are involved in locating the wheel and take forces. In double wishbone, the wishbones and subframe do the work.

>>13991181
It has a bumper. That picture was taken when I was waiting for the new one to arrive.
Take your head out of your ass.
>>
>>13991170
It still helps to give a stiffer mounting points for the springs and dampers to let them do their job properly. Whether it's an effective use of the money, space, or weight depends on how strong the tub and strut towers are.
>>
>>13991194
Seems like it was.

>>13991195
>It has a bumper. That picture was taken when I was waiting for the new one to arrive.

So why did you post it as the OP you dumbfuck?
>>
>>13991153
>Oops, front is narrower than the rear*
I know what you mean, it's pretty abnormal. You are measuring from WMS to WMS and not from outside edge of the wheel, right?
>>
>>13991081
>>13991195
Who did you import with?

Why would Mazda put a second oil cooler on the Type-R model, which has 6 extra bhp? It looks cool.

>>13991190
17's

>>13991197
I can compress the springs on this car significantly by lifting the wheel up, while sat on the floor. The springs and dampers really don't do much work, and so neither do the strut towers.
My old Reliant Scimitar was the same up front. Great suspension system.

I posted it to attract neurotic, irrelevant replies.

Little bit stoned. WMS?

Just don't let Wallanius Wilhelmsen Logistics do the handling in the UK. Thieving bastards.

adjust your front tire pressure you dingus

I'm not sure if it was just the tyres I was using. I wasn't running them all that low, around 25psi (32psi recommended)
Both fronts are doing it, nearside on the outside, offside on the inside.

>>13991240
My bad, I'm measuring outside edges. I meant my rear track is wider because of the wider wheels.
Mazda built it as a 50/50 distribution car, I understand that the extra rubber at the back is what's causing my issues.
>>
>>13991231
>Why would Mazda put a second oil cooler on the Type-R model, which has 6 extra bhp? It looks cool.

Probably because that was the "dedicated track version" and cooling is one of the primary concerns when racing, doubly so if it's a brap-brap-apex-seals engine.
>>
>>13991246
It's a daily. It's my only car. As in, it doesn't get everything done at once.
I swapped to the popups recently, and that cover came with it. I'm looking for an OEM lid.

>>13991258
Yeah, bad example lol.
>>
>>13991153
So youre running winter tires in the front and performance tires in the rear and youre wondering why you have understeer when driving hard?
>>
>>13991320
kek
>>
>>13991253
>running 7 psi under recommended
Put them at 32 cold.
>>
>>13991320
Just swapped to my winter setup as I said. The post is about my normal setup.

>>13991338
I used to. I've dropped them down to counter the lack of front end grip, I found 25psi works about right
>>
>>13991231
>17
Okay, halfway there...
>>
>>13991386
I play with mechanicals, I don't dabble much in wheels or suspension setups. What is it you want to know?

Front tyres are 225/45/17
Rears are 255/40/17

The guy at the fuel station said something about them being 6j and 9j last night, but he was just admiring them from the booth so I don't know how accurate that would be.
>>
>>13991045
I remember you. Still have that scimitar?
>>
>>13991412
Hey dude. Still got it, still sat in my parents place needing the body swapping to a new chassis lol.
>>
nice car OP
get spacers

Spacers it is then, they're not too expensive.
Not sure how far I can go though, the front tyres already munch my arches if I even think about bumps.
