I think we should try and get this list done. Along with amount of training before you're on your own, realistic income, pros and cons, home time and work schedule, etc.

Here's my Pepsi review. Similar to most soda/beer companies.
>training
One day in a meeting room learning all the rules, then anywhere from 4-6 weeks on the truck with another driver. Pay was $12/hr for the 4 weeks.
>realistic income
Salary plus comission. The first couple months on the truck, maybe $800-$900. Once you figure out the route, $950-$1100 depending on volume. $45k-$55k per year depending on how good you are.
>Home time and schedule
Monday thru Friday, start between 5am and 6am. Average day is 10hrs. Once or twice a month, a 12-13hr day.
>Pros
Home nightly. Exercise, freedom from an office and bosses, human interaction with customers
>Cons
Human interaction with customers, lots of lifting and hard work, day isn't done until truck is empty, working in bad weather

Okay, here is the first spreadsheet. These are primarily just van and reefer regional and OTR companies. I have intentionally left out companies like CR England, CRST, Werner, etc.

I will add flatbed, tanker, and perhaps more LTL companies later if people are interested. I personally don't want to start in these, so I haven't included them yet.

Then there's beverage companies and various class b stuff.

Also, when you see *****in it, that's a highly respected user at The Truckers report. I am not sure if I want to share his username on here, because this is 4chan.

It's sloppy and perhaps not organized well, but here's the download link:

I've only ever driven an international truck, what are the other ones like, and the best brand?

Handling, speed, stronger engine, etc
>>
>>13992045
I've driven Columbia's, Cascadia's, Volvo's, Pete's, and KW's and so far I'm liking the KW's the best. It's mostly that they ride softer and smoother but there are other minor details that seem retarded at first but then when you experience how the others perform the same tasks you realize that somebody there put a little thought into a truckers daily life. And yes, sometimes KW has little quality-of-life improvements over Pete's so even though both are owned by PACCAR they are not carbon copies.

Well I put them in that order as sort of a personal ranking, but I don't know much of anything about CAT and Cummins, is why I put them together. I also forgot Volvo makes their own engines as well.

I thought detroits were only so well liked because of their durability and ease of finding replacement parts, didn't know they were known for fuel efficiency. How do newer hippie Detroits with all the environmentally friendly equipment shape up compared to their predecessors?

Also I put the Vulcan in there as a rank above PACCAR. I hated my '97 Taurus, but I will admit that fucking engine was sturdy.

>All in my opinion:
Internationals are garbage. They are the cheap fleet truck. Companies want to save a few $$ on the original purchase price and then the truck is in the shop twice a month. Older Internationals are still shitty, but were tough as nails.

Freightliners are better fleet-tier trucks. Tons of them on the road so parts are always easy to find. Drivetrains are normally decent, but other parts lack build quality.

Kenworths are my favorites. They are reliable with the right engine, ride smooth, and seem to have good build quality. Shit just doesn't break on them like Freightliners and Internationals.

I haven't driven a Mack in a few years, but I was talking with a mechanic about them the other day. He says the engines and drivetrains are nice, but everything else is poorly built and always breaking.

And Volvos are supposed to be the nicest to drive but lots of proprietary stuff that makes them a pain to service. If you keep up with maintenance and everything, they are real nice.

Haven't driven a Pete in years either. Same company as KW, but normally not fleet trucks because they are pricey.
>>
>>13988705

With Prime if you go flatbed then you get a condo, they don't give the lightweight trucks to those guys for some reason.

Any of you guys here hang out on the Truckers Report forum a lot? That Joseph113 dude that works at Lessors is pretty entertaining, gets into tons of slapfights with the mods and other users. Kinda funny imao.

>>13993165

Volvo is really popular among the Eastern European drivers that run out of Chicago. You see tons of beat up old white Volvos all over Chicago, usually dragging some rusty junk van trailer with Ivan at the wheel.
>>
I had two questions for you guys, how bad is leasing a truck through a mega like Swift, Prime, Schneider etc. and what is per diem pay?
>>
>>13995446
You'd be a fuckin idiot if you lease a truck. Save up 10k to put down on a truck for you to own and the payments be as much as the lease
>>
>>13992045
Any euro is miles ahead in driver comfort than any american truck I have driven.
>>
>>13995446
Leasing is generally a financial death sentence. There is one Prime driver that comes around here bragging about how he made it through a lease, but there are thousands of drivers every day getting their asses handed to them through similar programs.

Per diem is a daily tax exemption given to workers that travel. Essentially every full day you're away from home the first $60 something dollars you earn are tax free, as it's assumed you'll spend more than that on travel expenses. You don't need to save your receipts, but you do need to have your logs available in the event of a tax audit. You also get a half exemption any day you leave or arrive at your domicile, and it's slightly higher when you leave the country. This is usually the biggest tax deduction for OTR drivers.

Part of the problem is that companies set these drivers up to fail 75% of the time. Usually the lease agreeement will favor the company. There's still a few companies where you can succeed in a lease but they're few and far in between.

Probably just blew a hose. I've had it happen 3 times. 2 times were in the morning. I get to my first stop, come back to the truck to a pond of coolant. The other time was when I was driving back to the plant in the afternoon and a hose decided to shit out on I-95. Great smoke show the last few blocks to the plant.

The 2 times it blew in the morning, the mechanic just brought me a new tractor. He had a big jug of coolant, some duct tape, and a plastic bag, and managed to get the truck back to the shop.

>The energy consumed by blow driers is more harmful to the environment than just using a fucking paper towel
Blow driers aren't about environmental responsibility, no matter how much the companies that build them like to market them that way. Blow driers are installed to keep bathrooms clean and reduce the need to restock towels and empty trash.

Because humans are complete monsters who will take 50 towels to dry their hands and then throw them all in the sink & urinal when they are done. Assuming they don't just drop them wherever they stand.

Y'all folks who've worked jobs that had public restrooms understand. The american public has no idea what a garbage can is, let alone how to use one.

Driving a Pete with a PACCAR, myself. It makes decent power. My last truck, a Columbia like TF's, was more powerful, but also pre-DEF. The part that's most shit about a PACCAR engine is they have trouble a LOT, and a great deal of the time you have to take it to a Peterbilt mechanic or dealer for service because it won't fucking tell you what's wrong. First month I had the truck, it spent the 2nd and 4th weeks in the shop. It still throws the check engine light regularly, but so far it's gone away each time within minutes. (Knock on wood.)

>>
>>13999551
Alright, I read up on a few things they say after you complete driving with a trainer you move on to driving in your own truck.

Now is this just saying "your own truck" as the alone in one they give you to drive, or is this literally "your own truck" one you have to buy?
>>
>>13999531
160hr course for me in IL. Takes anywhere from a month to 3+ months depending how much time you put in. If you aren't retarded, it isn't hard.

Look around for community colleges that offer it first. Then private schools. The whole thing is you don't want a company to pay because you have to sign a BS contract and will probably get screwed. Schools will have recruiters that come around and companies will pre-hire you before you even get your license.
>>
>>13999561
You will drive with a trainer for a month or two when you start at a company. You will be in his truck.

When you get done with that, they will put you in "your" truck which means a company-owned truck that you drive every day and live out of.

In the future you can buy your own truck and contract yourself to another company. But that is another story.

F2F is dealing with a bullshit claim PLS filed on a load of onions in a dry van because the heater supplied by the shipper failed and the onions froze. Took them 10 months to put a hold on us.

Drywall, paper rolls, and onions are more hassle than they're worth on a flatbed.

I think 4 picks and 4 drops was the most faggotry I ever subjected myself to for a single load. I've done 6 picks and 5 drops on the trailer at once with LTL, and my longest LTL chain was around 12 picks and 10 drops going from the west coast to Cleveland.

>>13999646
It was kind of a pain in the ass because a few of the older trailers appeared to have been parked underwater for a few years. I carried two tarp straps, a hammer, and PB Blaster, and only had two trailers that couldn't slide their tandems. One had a broken slider rail, and the other had clearly struck a curb at 60mph+ and was misaligned by about 2" front to back to the point that two of the pins didn't even reach the holes in the rails. Took both to the same trailer shop in St Louis. They'd knock out a malfunctioning ABS circuit in a few hours, so I gave them a lot of business and they always jumped me to the front of the line any time they had the parts on hand.

I'm more or less just interested in keeping my options open.

I'm going to school for something I really enjoy but I'm not sure if it will pan out, and I still have plenty of funding left to cover any other field if I wanted to. I just see driving like this to be a nice option to me. I'm single, I don't care about living in a house, the only thing I want is a garage and a small studio place.

Just passed my CDL test, looking to do flatbed.
Anyone have experience with TMC? It seems they pay high percentages but give you cheap freight until you have years of experience.
I'm also considering PGT because they're closer to home and have good freight in the area. I'm in eastern PA btw.
Any advice?

Those are Turnpike doubles, an LCV only allowed on Florida's turnpike as far as that state goes. It's also allowed in several other states with turnpikes, I believe. Loved seeing those things out on the road, wonder how difficult it is to drive one...

lmao, about 2 weeks ago here in Ohio our main state route was shut down for an accident and traffic was being detoured down what you would call a mickey mouse road. This road was not at all designed for 18 wheelers and they actually are not allowed to use it. It was a horrific nightmare. I felt so bad for those guys.
>>
>>14003343
Yeah, that shit happens. You get used to that sort of thing happening after a while. At first freaks you out a bit. Probably the worst part is that on roads bad for trucks it slows down the rest of the traffic / car traffic even more.
>>
>>14003392
They legit could not make their turns without assistance from other drivers either stopping way short or backing up. I'm sure it gave someone PTSD that night.

>>
>>14003304
I know Broward County like the back of my hand. If I do look up an address on my phone with Google Maps, I will never follow their route. I just take main streets. I have seen rookie drivers try to use the GPS to route them everywhere, and it takes them on tight side streets and places where a semi truck doesn't belong.

>>14003181
I haven't noticed any difference.

>>14002708
Same thing here mostly. You just do enough to pass the test and learn everything else when you get hired. The majority of the 160hrs is learning what to look for during pre-trip inspections.

>>14002670
I've seen those a handful of times. Not sure what they are for. Big deliveries for single locations? Or going from one DC to another? Most times I have seen them, they are on the highway and not out on deliveries.

>>14002512
I don't think they're too bad on the highway. But wind does fuck with them. And don't pull into a dead end. Doubles really don't go anywhere besides the highway from one DC to another.
>>
>>14004933
I've seen dual 53' out here in canukistan and I think they only operate at certain hours etc. Either way, they probably have their route preapproved etc cuz getting stuck would suck.

My 8hrs training included the pre trip stuff.

It is ridiculously easy to get your truck licence in Australia.
I got my MC (road train/b-double) licence recently, it cost 800 roobux and only took 6 hours. Didnt even have to do any sort of DOT test, instructor just signed off on a form that I am competent in driving a truck with two or more trailers.

The doubles/triples endorsement in the US is a 15 question multiple choice test. Costs ~$25 depending on which state you live in. Tanker endorsement is the same. Hazmat is a little longer because you have to pay ~$100 for the background check.

Automatics in big trucks are not like the ones found in cars. Automated would be a better description since they have a clutch that the PCM applies when the accelerator is applied and the trans shifts in the same manner as a regular unsynchronized manual trans. From the outside you can't tell an automated trans truck from a manual shift by watching it.

I will fucking never eat at the dunkin's in my home town. I worked there for two weeks, dropped a donut box on the floor, and then threw it in the trash. The manager (Indian, as were the owners) scolded me for being wasteful, fished it out of a loaded garbage can, and tossed it back on the top of the stack. A customer saw and asked me over the counter, "did he seriously just fucking pull that out of a trash can?" I nodded and the guy left. Your best bet is going to be fontana area.
Google maps for "cowboy burger", on etiwanda ave. free parking if you spend 10bux in the restaurant. There's two Farmer Boys restaurants on the same road with truck parking, but they're tiny.

However, you can also legally park on the street on De Forest Circle, and Riverside Dr.
These are all near the intersections of I15, I10 and CA60.

The TA and Petro in ontario are close, okay for a stop in for food or a shower, don't park overnight unless you want to pay for the privelege of getting robbed.

There's also a good mexican food place name of Alberto's off CA60 pyrite street exit 46. I've parked on the street there but it's sketchy.

You might also ask swift if they have a terminal or drop lot in the area. Most large companies do, and swift is the biggest.

Americans do not deserve the potato.

Would become a trucker just to chase epic meals/10

Fork. It looks literally delicious. That would be be called steak cut.

What else would we do with Idaho and the like.

How are you considered "your own boss" if you still work for a company, drive their truck, take loads they assign, and pretty much do what they tell you? Are you only "your own boss" if you owner/operate?

Is a days work really that hard/long for a trucker? My friend used to drive OTR to make money for college, and he said he had plenty of personal time at the end of the day to relax. He said the drivers that complained where just old and had no hobbies
>>
>>14016734
I wouldn't worry about it. I've posted my plates and stuff. Plus I have a fucking WAT sticker on my trailer.

>tfw finally got my $5600 from insurance!
Not sure what to waste it on yet. Gotta buy my mom some new tires on her Jeep so she doesn't die. Then maybe finally get FL plates and insurance on my car. That's gonna suck.

Hookers and blow
>>
>>14018008
Yeah if you're a company driver like myself you're not your own boss. That's only if you own and operate your own truck.

As for a day's work, it's not hard, but it is long. My days are usually never shorter than 12 hours, but that does include a minimum 30 minute break and usually some down time at at least one shipper or consignee. Then I get ten hours off, usually two hours of vidya and shitposting and then 8 hours of sleep.
>>
>>14018050
It's tempting. I just want to take a week off of work and go on a fishing and heroin binge.
>>
>>14018051
how do you vidya in your truck? laptop?
>>
>>14018095
Before, yeah. Got tired of lugging the stupid thing around though. Now it's all 3/DS and GBA. Once they put in a TV I might bring my Wii U to play Xenoblade Chronicles X.

I have a 50" TV sitting in my bedroom that is supposed to be for my brother for Christmas. I'll sell it for the low. Samsung smart TV. It will totally fit in the truck.
>>
>>14018147
Kek, tempting, but the company is putting an LG HDTV in every truck this year.

why do all truckerfags hate cali
cali has best weather , real mex food , palm trees ect

Anyone know a good phone mount? I had a magnetic vent mount which was good because with the A/C it kept my phone cold while charging and watching YouTube/Netflix, but the vent in this International is really inconvenient, the steering wheel blocks the view of my phone

Preferably if it didn't leave glue residue, since this is a company truck

Come to think of it, I have two copies of Mario Kart DS (lost one, bought one, found first one) and two 3DS's. Now if only I had a karting buddy.
>>14018835
Don't know where you'll find it but one of my trainers had a cup holder mount, had a knob that expanded it so it fit snug in the cup holder, then a clamp on a posable gooseneck for the phone.

I know how to back. This lot is somewhat small, so I had to do a 90° back, with no lighting other than the lights on my truck. Managed not to hit anything though.

>>14019334
