My best friend bought a 2001 A4 a couple years ago with around 110k miles on it.
First night driving it, hit a pothole and the exhaust busted. A couple days later, timing belt broke and lol interference engines.
He ended up just buying a used engine for ~$1200 and dropping it in. New head and all the work would've been about the same. As soon as the thing was running, he just wanted to get rid of it. Dunno about the US, but in Canada you can, however you have to put any parts on the car that the Canadian market had that are required by law.
