Are buggies welcome ITT?

Ever since we watched that episode of Drake & Josh in high school where they built a street legal shitbox dune buggy, we've been wanting to try it.

By we I mean my brother and I.

I've also seen a few street-legal sidebysides at my local ride center. They seem interesting. I wonder about the gas mileage on them.

>Orieon Reeper

It has a DOHC 800cc engine. 53 HP. So probably around 40-50 MPG.

They should be
Great fun, and simple work... the "difficulty" of the build depends really on wether or not you're going to shorten the floorpan to build a "proper" two-seater or just keep it at the standard length and have some shitty cramped rear seats

Been helping to further build the purple one myself, both belonging to a friend of mine. Redone all the wiring (retarded previous owner who had built most of it), new suspension as the old one was way too soft and the front wheels would touch the body on bumpy roads, need a new oilpan as current one has a crack, need new tires... its a bit of work, but its all damned simple, parts are 100% available for everything and its very accessible
>>
>>13983653
Fuck that's nice m8

You're doing great work

I can't wait until I can work on a buggy of my own, they just seem like a lot of fun
>>
>>13983666

They are real headturners, let me tell you. Especially if you have a good exhaust on it aswell

We're not really sure what to do with the red one tho... the 1.4 is quite worn, but the quality of the build is quite a bit better than the purple one, and the body is more "correct" although I think the purple one looks better

Most likely we're going to build the engine into a 1.6 using EMPI-parts, fuel-injection and maybe even a small turbo

>all dat bodywork
Might as well drive a Suzuki Samurai with the roof down. Same size, too.
>>
>>13983675
Good luck! Hope it turns out good.

>>13983676
Sammies are so hard to come by though, and parts are far more expensive than they are for buggies.

Also the gas mileage on them isn't great for such a small vehicle.

A Crosskart would be street legal here in Canada and would be extremely fun on the 1000's of km's of dirt and gravel roads we have, especially in the winter. 600 lbs and 150hp. Dat sound.

just take some 600+ cc i4 motorcycle, weld a frame around the engine, put four wheels on and you have it.
Same sound, same vehicle.

My dad had a metallic green buggy just like these that sat in my great grandma's garage for decades. He sold it for $800 as soon as I was old enough to drive because 'it's way too dangerous and I don't want you ever driving it'. I sure showed him by buying a motorcycle.

fuck 800 thats so cheap. even if it had no engine thats a fucking steal
>>
>>13984163

Not quite. It's pretty hard to design a proper suspension setup like on a crosskart. You could build your own if you had the skills and time or just buy one and be done with it. They're only around 20 grand I think.
>>
>>13984188
If I had any idea where it ended up I would go and offer 3 times that to buy it back. That was about 12 years ago though so who know's what's happened to it. Cheapest I've seen one since then that wasn't beat to shit was $4k

they're legal in Japan too. I rented one in Tokyo for about $25USD an hour last time i was there. You can drive them anywhere, with no restrictions. They just give you the keys, no rules or explanations, no deposit, no insurance... was shocked it was somehow legal.

Not necessarily. The ones that have a top speed of 90 km/h are registered as cars, and you can drive them on the highway, as well.
>>
>>13984356

I looked around a bit, there are a few of them for sale as 150cc, 190cc and so on that are registered as four-wheel motorcycles and so on which can be driven on a normal car-license

Yeah, we don't really know either... if it has a volume over 125cc and three/four wheels and is registered as a motorcycle you can drive it on a normal car-license
