This is my issue as well. V8 S10 puts me in either EM (running against LS1 Miata on racing tires) or SSM (running against stuff w/ racing tires).

ive done some tarmac stuff but i prefer the dirt/gravel autocross events.
Tarmac hillclimbs and rally events are fun as fuck though.

You should be just looking at overall time and comparing yourself to anyone who's close because not only will you find the top people close to the edge of the rules, but have also been doing autocross for alot longer.
Ive seen datsun sunny's embarrass 400hp evos because the driver has been doing events for the last 20 years while the evo drivers are still fairly new.
as myself and some mechanic friends were recently discussing with a novice who was asking about racing, "if you want to build a car to win that class, buy X, dont bother with anything else, if you want to build a car to have fun, choose what you like the look of but dont expect to be winning the class"
i dont really know how else to put it but i hope i got the point across.

Like some guy with a Boxster S actually wanted to trade his 6 speed transmission for my 5 speed because it would have better shift points for autoX
