Considering 90s 1/2 tons are falling apart under their own weight, they're not very good for any of those uses. Many 90s 1/2 ton drivetrain components should have been reserved for 1/4 tons.

What neither of you seem to understand is that heavier duty trucks hold up better under the same conditions. It doesn't matter if you only "need" a 4k tow rating for 3k lbs. A truck rated for 8-10k isn't going to wear out as quickly and will stop that trailer faster. It might matter if there were a significant price difference, but there's not. There is nothing wrong with having more than you think you need. Learn to leave some headroom, kids. It's a good thing, not a bad thing.

the ride height, the bed, the torque, yeah try pulling 10klbs with a unibody car and a stock 6" diff. all of our work trucks are ram 1500s and they are nice trucks. you cant haul tools and 2x12s and shit around in a civic.

the amount of shit that you can pack into a truck + trailer doesn't even compare to a car.
when we go to the track we pull a flatbed, with a 2,000 lb car and in the bed tool chest, tires, air, ezup, chairs, cooler. you can't do that with a car.

They're built with stronger components. Stronger components last longer under the same conditions. This is the exact same concept you're trying to imply with cars vs trucks. For gas trucks more than a few years old, there's often little to no price difference.

And not to rain on the parade, but lots of pickups with those tow mirrors piss me off when I'm driving my truck. Most of those dudes don't realize the mirrors stick like 18" off the side of the truck. They will drift into other lanes and I have to swerve so I don't take off their mirrors with my trailer.

If you really think a sedan is a replacement for a 1/2 ton truck tow a 3500 lb car on a 1000 lb trailer plus a few hundred pounds of motorcycle over several mountain passes. I did this several times before upgrading the drivetrain on my Ram and anything less would not have made it up those passes.

I have pulled a car on that trailer with my Jeep [which has a 5000lb tow rating] and there is NO WAY it would make it up those passes, even with plenty of torque to be had.

The 1/2 ton segment has a place. It's the midsize trucks that don't really belong anywhere.

That is why the 1/2 ton segment exists. I wasn't towing things every day but made several heavy trips with the truck that could not have been done with a lesser vehicle. It would have been easier to tow with a 3/4 ton truck but for the rest of the time I drive it I have a softer ride, slightly better mpg, a short wheelbase, and paid probably 20k less for the truck new than I would for a 3/4 ton.
