Theoretically you can run the engine like a constant speed generator so running as efficiently (or as powerfully) as desired and have the transmission take care of how that power is delivered.

While possible, you have to be able to drive manual and be VERY good at it in addition to having a fucking tiny speck of a car. Americans are none of those.
I still maintain that for the average American consumer, CVTs will provide better mileage than a standard planetary auto or Manuel.
