Hey /o/ first time poster from /out/. Need advice. I want a convertible to drive this summer. Have 2 options. I own a 65 mustang convertible. Needs about 16k in parts and labor to be awesome again (i have owned this car since 1997).
Option 2: there is a 1998 mustang cobra convertible for sale nearby for 12k. May be able to get owner down to 10k. Cobra is stock with only 41,000 miles.
What should I do /o/?
Fix the 65 or go for the Cobra?
Pic not related

Bump for reply.
>>
Neither can turn, so go with the '65 for coolness factor. The '98 is just kinda a douchemobile.
>>
>>13979395
The '65 will be worth more then 16K when you're done with it, and it'll appreciate provided you don't ruin it. It also looks better, and eventually you can swap in a fourspeed and a built 351/383 stroker.

The '98 will not appreciate, and looks like shite.

Bith aren't pinnacles of handling - but the '65 is the better deal.
>>
What the fuck, how old are you? Like 45?

Old men on /o/ top kek

1965 has the original 289 k code H.O. cant get rid of engine, would destroy cars value. it has a c4 in it right now which sucks balls. Thats going to be the biggest expense, putting in a t5 or AOD. Leaning toward the AOD cause it will make doing the power disc brake conversion cheaper/easier. (Has manual drums right now).
Not looking to race. Dont care about handling. Just cruising.
I love the SN95 mustangs. Maybe thats because I was in HS duing 95-98 (yep oldfag).

35. Dont normally lurk /o/. /out/ is my containment board.
>>
Fix up the '65, why is this even a question?
>>
>>13979500
I like the new edge SN95s too abon, but you've had that mustang for almost 10 years and it is a 65, I'd say go for fixing that one up. I assume you'd be getting the AOD out of a wrecked foxbody?

No love for sn95 cobras? I think these things look great. The one I was looking to buy looks exactly like pic relatec. Different generation I guess. Thanks for the advice /o/. I'll start buying the parts to fix up the 1965.

>No love for sn95 cobras?
Some like the the 03-04 Terminator ones, its really the only decent SN-95.
>>
>>13979632
Cobras are the only SN95s that can actually turn somewhat.
>>
The 1965 if it has a 4 speed manual and a V8.

Otherwise, buy an already restored first gen mustang convertible.

Maybe. One near me with 71,000 miles for $350. Have to buy a conversion kit thay comes with new torque converter and flex plate for $600. Then I have to get a new shorter drive shaft. Im going to get a new aluminum one instead of trying to shorten the stock one. Thats about $400. Looking at about $1350 for parts alone.

Here /o/ have a pic of my 1965 waisting away in the garage.

PICK ONE AND FUCKING STICK WITH IT CATSTANG
STOP BUYING UP RANDOM MUSTANGS
>>
>>13979694
10/10

Why these 2 mustangs, seems a bit random of a selection. After working on my 71 vette and my sons 89 vette I can tell you that guesstimated prices are usually off and something else needs to be fixed/replaced. The cobra will be less repairig but vs a 65 I think you'd get bored of the cobra.
>>
>>13979680
That's fucking mint, definitely fix that up.
>>
>>13979680
I'm not even that much into murribarges, but god damn, please fix that up. There's some real beauty there.

People actually post on /out/?

Fix the 65. Those Cobras are fun, but the 65 will be soooo much cooler.

Every SN95 vert is disgusting, regardless of submodel. I honestly like how the early SN95 cobra coupes look but not verts...

What caught my eye ITT was:
>I want a convertible to drive this summer.
>I own a 65 mustang convertible.
>Needs about 16k in parts and labor
>this summer
Are you planning on doing any of the work yourself or are you farming it all out? Cause if you're doing the bulk of it yourself, you best move the goal posts to *next* summer. *Next* as in summer 2017.

Too many people underestimate how long these big projects take.. ask me how i know. I jumped into a big project/partial restoration with my old mustang around october 2014, hoping to have it done and back on the road by summer this year... Well 14+ months and 3-4x over my original budget later and i'm realistically about to have it done by this (2016) summer...

Just something to keep in mind.

>why these two mustangs.
Bought the 65 in 1997. Drove it during HS and college. After college started working, got married, bought a house, had two kids. One day about 7 years ago a wheel cylinder busted. Wanted to upgrade to disc brakes anyway so didnt bother replacing wheel cylinder. More shit happened and the mustang hasn't been driven. Finally at a point where I got some extra cash to spend on something fun. I have always like the 94-98 mustang Cobras because when I was in HS between 95-98 (as stated before oldfag here) that was the dream. I guess the desire for a SN95 Cobra never left as I got older. I have always loved Mustangs, dont care if they are pleb or not, I love them. Sure I would love to get a Shelby GT500 but I dont have 50K to spend on what will basically be a weekend toy.

Anyway, thanks for the advice /o/. Will restore the 1965. Maybe get a Cobra 5 years down the road for my 40th.

>>13980490
Im farming out all body work beause I am shit at it. All upholstery will be hired out as well. I will be tackling the suspension, brakes, and AOD conversion. Im hoping the 289 still runs as good as it did 7 yrs ago. If it needs rebuilt that goes to a machine shop.
>>
>>13980546
Oh. Well that's not too bad then. 7 years is nothing... Change fluids, clean fuel lines, oil the cylinders and run that bitch. Bodywork is the biggest time-consuming fucking PITA out of everything.

>AOD as an upgrade
Is the C4 really that bad?
>>
>>13981134
For highway speeds the c4 is shit. Cruising at about 65mph engine is around 3000-3500 rpms. I want that overdrive to lower it to 1500 rpm
