The Tesla Roadster originally had 2 gears, but the transmission couldn't handle the torque. So now they just give you one gear - the equivalent of 1st gear. It kills the car's top-speed (no different than a gasoline car stuck in 1st gear) - the Model S tops out at 130mph. Tesla picked the gearing for the street, not the track.
That exemplifies the issue with Tesla - Tesla tailored the Model S for wealthy commuters, not the people on /o/. But Porsche is doing the same thing... with the 991-generation, Porsche has transformed the 911 into a grand tourer - the wheelbase is longer, and it's loaded with luxury features. Most people on /o/ don't have the money to buy a 911, so they tailor the car for who has the money, and the people who buy the majority of 911s commute to work in them.
