My dealership wants 400 dollaroos to change the fluid and filter on my automatic transmission at 50k.

Is this even needed? Its a vw.

This is false. Atf is a detergent and should be changed at regular intervals to remove contaminants from the system. Neglect is the #1 cause of failure in automatic transmissions.

Fluid and filter change at 50k is a great step to a car with 200k and the original drivetrain.

I had it done to a merc gm for i believe 130ish by a shop.

Now i usually drain a gallon at a time from the atf return coupling at the radiator and add a gallon thru the dipstick with oil changes after i buy something.

I generally buy old shit with way sketchy servicing tho, ymmv

I'm not at all familiar with vw products but 1.5 hours of labor + parts and equipment should equal roughly $300-400 depending on the labor rate.

My local shop charges £50 (about $80) and hour, and that's still extortionate. I take my shitbox to a 4x4 specialist (despite the fact my shitbox is FWD) since he works for £25 (~$40) an hour
