Mechanic/tool thread, post your boxes, tools, complain about flat rate, complain about hourly, etc.

Anyone been into Sears for the tool sale that normally goes through December? Any other black Friday sales anywhere else?

Also, anyone have experience with Precision Instruments split beam style torque wrenches? I believe they are the same as the Snap On split beams. Thinking about grabbing one in 1/2"

Got this one a few years back for my garage. I like it. The 30" deep drawers are really nice. Always been a fan of the stereotypical British racing green.
>>
>>13958869

The PI and Snap-on torque wrenches are identical. I've used a PI 1/2 for 4-5 years now, no complaints at all.
>>
i throw all my tools on the ground or in open boxes
lmao at people who spend more time and money on stupid shit than actually wrenching
>>
>>13958993

How does owning a box cost anyone time? If anything it saves time. No need to rifle through multiple boxes or search a shitty garage floor for a socket.

Money is one thing, but not being poor helps with that.
>>
>>13959020
i know where i throw things. i guess a chest would be nice though, throw my shit in there instead of on the ground and have some more open space.
>>
>>13959047

Tripping over shit kinda sucks. Plus...I don't have a warehouse huge garage so keeping it clean lets me fit both cars in.

Yeah i just have a few piles of tools too.

What kind of faggots sit around organizing tools.
>>
>>13959067
Pegboards can't be locked, can't hold many tools in a small space, and aren't great at holding heavy/large tools like impacts, that's why you rarely see them in a shop.

I really hope Bendpak fixes this lift. I finally have enough money to get it flush-mounted in the center of my garage....and it's delayed until Feb. 2016.

I just spent the last 7 hours researching volumetric efficiency, anyone know any other good things to learn that would help understand how to tune engines or along those lines?

They're nice for things like electric drills, and a few small things in your own garage but are otherwise pointless. Even in the garage I've started to stop using mine because it's such a pia to get anything off of it if they're above head height.

just where I work has things like large lathe steady stands and 24 inch crescent wrench are hung from peg boards
and if you want to move some tools a cantilever tool box or lock bag is used

iL bring back photos when next I see you

What is wrong with it now?
Feb isn't too far off.

I need to get a box badly, so many tools in my garage in like 4 different boxes/on a desk. Theyre so damn expensive though

I have a toolbox, this is the only picture I have of it. It's 41" Been thinking of getting a snap on box but I don't like the gay plastic latch things their bottom stringer boxes have.
>>
>>13959886

Don't know. I assume there's some minor engineering flaw. Bendpak is a pretty good lift company, so they'd hold it back for almost anything that's below 100%.

Hi guys, budding technician here.

I'm about to start school at my local community college for an associates degree in automotive technology, and they gave me a list of tools I need to acquire.

>17 piece SAE wrench set 1/4" - 1 1/4"
>17 piece Metric wrench set 8mm - 24 mm
>44 piece 1/4" drive SAE/Metric socket set (shallow & deep)
>47 piece 3/8" drive SAE/Metric socket set (shallow & deep)
>24 piece 1/2" drive SAE/Metric socket set (shallow & deep)
>8 piece screwdriver set
>12/24 volt test light
>Digital Volt-Ohm Meter with at least 10 Meg/Ohm Impedance
>4 piece pry bar set
>5 piece pliers set
>12 piece Torx Bit set (T-10 - T-60)
>7 piece SAE hex bit set (1/8" - 3/8")
>7 piece Metrix hex bit set (3mm - 10mm)

Anyone have any suggestions for the cheapest possible way to get all these? eBay maybe?

I'm a tech student and I just bought into the 60% tool set and then just got myself a cheap cart to stuff it all in, but some other kids just went and got mismatched sets for as cheap as they could find at sears an online and they seem to be getting by perfectly fine.

What the fuck is going on in this pic?

I'm not sure about the rest of /o/, but if those cabinets were in my workspace, they would need to be re-finished every other week. Probably covered in stickers too.
>>
What kind of cordless impacts are you guys using? I sold my Matco but need to get a new one since the air at my new shop is super weak. One cool thing we have though is a nitrogen tank hooked up to a 3/4" drive impact for taking off center lock wheels, would probably explode a normal impact though, I think it's something like 700 psi.

dammit.
I have a snappy box in black, bought it off the truck because it was on promo. like 1200 bucks off retail and my previous box was getting crowded as fuck.

god dammit, I didn't know snappy boxes came in BRG. that shit is the tits man.
>>
>>13963487
You can get any color you want, I wanted a white one and my rep said he would have one painted and get it to me in a week if I wanted (I think they eventually did a run of white ones later on, or a really light silver).
>>
I personally highly recommend the harbor freight boxes. I spent the money I saved on an expensive box on more tools. It's easy to find really good deals on high end tools, but a little harder (at least around me) to find great deals on boxes.

A lower cost box full of higher end tools made the most sense for me. So much so that I had to buy a second box because my first one is full of all the specialty shit I've accumulated and made from all of the random jobs I've done for friends.

Snap-on dealer comes by on Fridays.

I really want to swap out my box for an iconic red one. Gotta see how much of a hit I'd take in on the trade, but I've got a lot of tools off that truck so I should have some sway.

But dammit, that BRG box looks pretty fucking sweet.

I somewhat agree with this, even after half a decade at Ford I only had a cluster fuck of shitboxes. Could never justify dropping 5k+ on even a starter box, when my shit held tools just fine.

I thought that too...

Five years of being a flat rate tech for Ford deep in the salt belt was quite the waste of time. Would have made much more had I picked a better trade.

Dude throwing your tools on the ground is such a childish habit, you are a growned man and can spend 2 seconds to place them away properly and not be a gorilla with them...

I'm sure you might've even broken some tools this way as well....
>>
>>13964872
Other trades make the same amount of money and also have to be invested into.

electrician, same income unless you work for yourself.
construction, same income.
welding, same income (and takes longer to make that much)

You could be a service manager and make 6 figures after being a mechanic. Or open your own shop.

There's guys making 40k in construction that have been framing for 30 years. Then there's guys that start framing and then become contractors and make 120k. Or become site supers and make 90k or whatever. I mean you can go anywhere with anything. It's not really about where you start.

It's easy to say yeah just go get an engineering degree.. but that kind of environment just isn't for everyone.
It's hard to say really where anyone will be in 5 years or what opportunities they will come across.
