This. While I never actually ran out of gas (though one time, I filled 13.993 gallons out of a possible 14 gallon tank...), I used to run my tank down very close to empty every time. I have no doubt it's the main factor in why I had to replace my fuel pump.

And fuck that. Replacing that shit on a '94 LeBaron is not worth it. I'd have happily paid to have it done.

in my experience, not really

theres so much random shit - weather, bugs, road problems/shit on the road, retarded cagers, asshole cops - that wants nothing more than to ruin a bikers day that car drivers can mostly ignore

for a track for sure bikes can't be beat for the price, but public roads are awful for motorcyclists

No, don't live in the city.

I will say that the majority of my motorcycling hours have been spent on commutes so I suppose that biases my opinion. Living in the midwest probably doesn't help either.

Not as much as you'd think. Mechanical fuel pump, not one in each tank, and a switch to a selector valve under the bed. If the valve/switch ever craps out, you can jump the line from the tank directly to the fuel pump line and bypass it.

>drivers cab corner bloating out with rust
>replaced factory windshield that was cracked and delaminating, pinch weld rust in 3 spots, only 1 of them is bad
>"choke quit working so it's wired open" really turned out to be vac line shoved into the choke plate
>brilliant PO also did the brakes while only replacing 1 of the soft lines, causing the truck to pull hard to the right when trying to stop at 50+mph
>"it doesn't run smooth but it'll run all day long", timing was 14 degrees off, 2 plug wires were swapped, and the cap/rotor were so old it was jumping spark to the rotor and melted half of the cap and coil, I have no idea how it ran at all

The list continues. Paid $3000, put roughly $1300 into it since, $560 of that being tires this month, and I love the fucking thing to death.

1. If there's any doubt when looking at a vehicle, walk away
2. Dont settle if you dont have to.

3. If someone is selling a vehicle, there's a reason.

4. When you go on a test drive, dont just drive 2 miles down the block and back. Take that thing on the highway, through town. Let it rev up and drive it hard.

5. If you're unhappy about any part of the deal (IE you think you're overpaying, the guy selling is a dick, etc) just walk away.

6. TRUST YOUR GUT!! If something doesn't feel right, its not. walk away. Trust me.

7. When you look at the car, look over it with a fine tooth comb. Ask about maintenance, check EVERY fluid, look at the air filter (Can help give you an idea of how well the vehicle was maintained). Have a friend come with you, listen to the fuel pump, lift up the carpet and check out the floorboard etc.

8. If you meet with someone and they immediately start "being upfront" with you about a few little problems, let that be a red flag. Sometimes they're genuinely honest, sometimes they're trying to establish trust so you think "This dudes pretty honest, I dont think there's anything else wrong with the car or he would have told me". This one is 50/50, let it come up naturally. Again, trust your gut.

9. Do tons of research on a car before you go to look at it. Then ask the owner a few questions that you already know the answer to. it can give you a good insight as to the owners mechanical knowledge and how well it was maintained. I know my vehicle inside and out

10. Dont take the owners word for ANYTHING. "The check engine light is on, its for an 02 sensor. I have the part right here, just havent had the time". Scan that shit, dont trust someone thats trying to sell you something.

11. If someone feels shady, just walk away. A slightly overpriced vehicle from an honest person > a good deal from someone you get odd vibes from.

12. No receipt, it didn't happen. Period.

Also, I'm not sure how you think that a slalom is the most important test of a car's handling ability.

FWD is by design worse than RWD.
In FWD, the front tires have to do all the work, meaning they reach their limit of traction faster.
In RWD, the front wheels turn and the rear wheels provide the drive, diversifying the load. This means the car can be pushed farther before the limit of traction is reached.

I understand how hydraulic power steering works, I was talking about full electric steering in some of the new cars. I know that the mechanics still work but it just requires more strength to operate in the hydraulic systems when the engine is off. The power steering in my truck has never worked so I'm well aware of that works. It's a bitch to park, especially with the big wheels on it. I was just curious on the electric power steering and how it works if the engine is off since I thought electric power steering is not assisted.

.

>Also, I'm not sure how you think that a slalom is the most important test of a car's handling ability.
Slalom speed is a measure of transitional stability, it's a better way to compare than skidpad grip IMO. For example, Mustangs have high skidpad numbers but few consider them to handle well.
>>

Bros, if you engine shuts off while you're moving and in gear, its still spinning until you come to a complete stop. Since the steering pump is run from a belt by the motor, you will have power steering until you stop.

This is true, and is the most important aspect of pump health. But (now this may be common myth, idk) I have always been told that letting it get that low does 2 bad things: puts more strain on the pump, as it isn't submerged in gas and needs to work harder, and when you run low, you're going to take in some shit off the bottom of the tank.

They make sense, but I'm starting to think they're logical bullshit.

>>13960552

Very possible. While there were a few design factors of that car I thought were nice, I learned more that I thought were stupid while working on it.
>>

>puts more strain on the pump

Also nonsense.

The pickup is at the bottom of the tank. Thus it is always under about the same load to pump fuel and what's at the bottom of the tank is being ingested, anyway. Secondly, there is a filter around the pickup.

No, it's called a "parking" brake now because faggots like you thought it was supposed to function exactly like the normal brake system, it didn't, they sued. Same reason why the firewall is now called a weather barrier, and McDonald's has to tell you their coffee is fucking hot.

Where did I say that? You normally brake with your peddal (the one in the middle). Handbrake allows you to keep the brakes on when parked so you can let go of the pedal and exit the vehicle.
>>
This anon >>13966400 is (somewhat) right.

By law in most countries cars must have two independent braking systems that are both able to brake the car down to 0. Though the handbrake is considered a parking brake it's designed as an emergency braking system.

Not true. The fuel acts as coolant and lubrication for the pump. They're designed to be run full of fuel, not dry. Now obviously the consequences of this are going to depend on how long you run it dry for, etc

I'll add to this.

If you are spending more than a couple of grand, insist on taking it to a trusted mechanic, have them put it up on a lift, and go over every single inch of it for rust and patch jobs.

Nothing wrong with buying a vehicle with some rust if you know about it, and are paying almost nothing for it, but if you are buying a lightly used car for 10 grand, it ain't fucking worth dealing with a big rust problem.
>>
>>13963162
The pressure difference from going uphill a foot is meaningless compared to the pressure of the fuel system so that's a moot point. As for keeping it cool, it's possible, but realistically should never matter. If a fuel pump is in a gas tank, and producing enough heat that it actually fucking matters if it's submerged or not, it's a goddamn fire hazard.

I like my father's truck's method. Fuel pump is belt driven from the engine. Worst thing that happens if you completely suck the tank dry is the pump might need to be re-primed. Or since it's water cooled, you just crank the engine for 30 seconds and file it under "who gives a fuck"

this depends entirely on your leg strength and more importantly, the pedal ratio

Bullshit, I've coasted and used up the vacuum assist. Can still stop without the assist.

That's not a dry sump, you're thinking of a baffled oil pan.
A dry sump has a remote reservoir of oil so that the engine doesn't need a sump underneath it, thus shortening the height of the oil pan, allowing the engine to be mounted lower for better weight distribution.
Also it's unaffected by lateral-gees

Your options are quite limited when you're a 17 year old Brit. Say what you want about them, it was still a damn site better than the 1.2 superminis 95% of us get stuck with.

Thing was a very slow, being the 1.4 and all, but the steering was good and communicative and you could chuck it into a corner with a fair bit of gusto. Can't say I miss it much, but it wasn't bad, really.
