havent done an autopsy yet, but appears the driveshaft fell out, we had to get a flatbed to take it home.

Time to get a new gearbox. what 4age gearboxes are good? (atleast we found it doesnt have an LSD) synchros were going anyway so this is a handy excuse.

First gen Miata will wind up on you almost as badly as an MR2 if you get it wrong actually.. Shorter wheelbase, wide open loose chassis, and probably some pretty responsive dampers. So if he's scared and can't figure out how to take it easy step by step, then he should probably just stay away from sports cars.

Hey guys, Picked this up a couple of months ago,
Paid 500$ for it, The motor came with it just wasn't in the car. we put the engine in over about 2 weekends but we have not been able to get it to run smoothly. at first we where plagued by bouncing idles. then we fixed that by adjusting the TPS leting the air out of the coolant. we where still idling pretty high though at around 2k but I drove it a while anyhow because I wanted to experience an AW11 for the first time. We then realized we never timed it, we just through the distributor on we found out that it was actually about 25 degrees advanced so we set it to factory timing and now the car has no acceleration or power and still idles at around 2k we where not able to get it back to when it was able to drive. And I'm at a loss now, I have no clue what it could be.
>>
>>13962571
I forgot to mention it also wont start anymore, my starter motor tries but the engine never fully starts. unless we retard the timing. but then I cant drive it because of the no power thing.

Reset to TDC.
Start at the bottom and check the main gear.
Then check cam gears
Check that there's no slack on the free side (opposite the tensioner)
Then check ignition timing again. (Easy to be off a tooth here)
>>
>>13963173
I think the only thing there I missed was checking the main gear, So I guess I'll start there, but how am I able to get it timed correctly if I'm a tooth off?
I'm using a timing light for reference and im able to time it by the BGB's specs.

What sort of power are you playing with? If you're putting out any more than 170hp at the crank, try and get an E58 and matching driveshafts.

Otherwise, you could go for a C160 with an LSD. You will need to modify your shift linkages as it's a six speed and not a five speed though.

Cold start injector is stick open. Common fault. Rip apart intake manifold and clean everything with carb cleaner or other solvents, stay away from basic/alkaline chemicals as the will damage aluminium.

While you're in there be sure to clean MAF sensor, throttle body/valve and idle air control valve. Those when dirty can lead to idle surge/ hunting idle. 30 years of fine dirt that passes the filter builds up
>>
>>13969921
I've cleaned the AFM already but didnt do the injectors. I'll check it out. But would that cause little to no acceleration?
>>
>>13969921
I was thinking it could be the Idle air control valve,
>>
>>13969989
IAC won't do more than about 1250rpm it doesn't open any wider.

Not sure about the acceleration issue, but commonly idling an 2k rpm is the cold start injector. Does the car hesitate under acceleration? Is your o2 sensor functioning.
>>
>>13970028I replaced the O2 sensor already, dont know how to test if its functioning.

When its timed correctly it doesnt hesitate, when I advance the timing it hesitates until 4K then its super smooth all the way to redline
>>
>>13970042
I forgot to re-instate that when timed correctly i have no power or acceleration it revs smoothly just super slowly

>>13970077
When I jumped the pins for timing the engine, the CEL flashes 11 times, but i assumed it was supposed to flash. Code 11 has to do with AC though tight? its an 85 btw

its a two digit code, so 11 is "Flash, flash, Gap, flash, flash, gap."
>>
>>13970091
>>13970192
dont worry about the timing gaps, its easy to see, atleast i found it was.

i saw there and wrote down each number as it passed, so i ended up with something that was like 1, 1, 3, 5, 2, 1, 5, 3, 2, 1, 1, 3, 5 and by the time i got here i figured it was repeating. then checked the manuel
>>
>>13970201
the codes are only two digits long, so from that you get
11
35
21
53
ifuckedup2
11
35
>>
>>13970207
Well the CEL flashes when you short the pins though, and since theres no gap and it flashs 11 times every time. Im going to assume theres no ecu codes.

third gen has grown on me, after seeing maybe six or so in person i'm starting to like the look. and the lightness is appealing, following one through a windy road it looked like it was much more "together" than my heavier turbo. >>13970192 too.

Nah, I love Tasmania. Used to live there before moving to NSW at the start of the year for work.

It's good if you have a stable job and income, and don't really like huge cities all that much. Every weekend I'd finish up work at 11:30 in the morning after a 6:30AM start so I'd head off for a drive through the hills. 10 minutes out of Hobart and you're already in prime hills territory, great for belting it out in a light weight car with not a heck of a lot of power. I explored a heap when I finished Year 12 and I wasn't doing a huge amount with my life aside from work.

On the mainland you just have to drive further away from anywhere to get to good roads. Where I am now, everything's pretty flat and the roads are all pretty straight. And you can't really stretch your car's legs a little without fear of being busted by HWP because they're everywhere.

By the same token, I'm not really a city person either, Sydney and Melbourne are stressful and too hektik for me. Different strokes for different folks.

>>13969409
Bastard. I had to surrender my P2 license for a NSW green P's license.

Hobart is a little more interesting, but up in Launceston where I live it's not quite as good. I don't really know of any good roads around here, but to be fair I haven't really explored much.

I reckon Hobart would be good enough for me, size-wise. Will probably move there some day. I haven't spent more than a few days at a time in big cities like Melbourne or Brisbane, but I do enjoy the liveliness of them, and I like the idea of living in one at some point - not sure if I'd actually enjoy it though.

And yeah, from what I have heard cops are completely nazis in all the major cities. Cops down here are chill enough, haven't been harassed by them at all, even as a p-plater in a modified turbo import.

>I don't really know of any good roads around here, but to be fair I haven't really explored much.
Check out some of the roads out around Scottsdale and further down the East Coast, there's some cool stuff around there. The Sideling is a good drive, perilous though. Even some of the roads on the way to Cradle Mountain and in through that whole farm land belt between Devonport and Smithton are cool as well. If you hang around in the /dat/ threads at all, Squishy should be able to give you some cool locations, he's spent more time in that area than I have.

Some of the big cities are okay, I don't mind Brisbane and Perth. I went to Brisbane for three weeks earlier in the year for work, place is pretty chilled out and weather is nice. NSW is a nightmare to get cars registered I've found out. Melbourne has some charm but it's busy and the weather is pretty garbage through winter.

Cheers for that, will do. I think I talked to Squishy a bit a little while ago, haha.

Can't say I'm not used to garbage weather, haha. But I love shitty weather, makes life more interesting. Queensland is too hot for me, also. Sweet place though, otherwise.

two new problems, horray

>Clutch makes noise when disengaged.

when engaged in neutral no noise.

>front left brake squeal when driving and locking up under braking
calliper seems to be on stiffer then the right.
warped disc or something else?
>>
The Toyota MR2 is a FWD car in reverse
>>
>>13974901
Noise in the trans is a worn out throw out bearing.
Front brakes always lock up first on the AW. You've probably got a lazy caliper on the other side. Or a stuck caliper on the noisy side. Pull it off and inspect
>>
>>13974957
>Noise in the trans is a worn out throw out bearing.
That is correct.
I wouldn't worry about it unless it gets super loud, just replace it when you replace your clutch.
>>
>>13974957
>>13974970
i thought that noise would only be there when the clutch is engaged?

as for the lcoking up, yes i know the car is heavily front biased, but this is a particular side, the left hand sliding pins are still in good condition. though i dont have my piston compressor tool on hand so cant reset the piston.

about to order a whole load of calliper rebuild kits for my cars, 6 fronts,4 rears.

i also have to track down a long standing issue that my clutch has HUGE amounts of travel from the bottom to the top, like its missing a stopper somewhere.
>>
>>13974957
calliper pulled half way off without using a prybar. and would require my piston compressor to get it back over the brake pads. Hopefully over xmas ill get it sorted. though i do have the over 26's drag racing soon and would rather have them fixed.

might get a friend to mail me his one.. that i actually made for him on a lathe

How the fuck do i take out the interior rear speaker/seat belt panel in a mk2? Ive got the screw out the engine release cover but the little cubby behind the drivers seat wont open so i cant release the clips, does the cubby behind the seats lock?
>>

The driver side cubby is snap in. It's not meant to open really. Works great for hiding a small amp though!
>>

Great thanks, i just hate forcing things if i'm not sure. My passenger side has the cd changer mounted to the lid, i guess i have to remove that to get the panel out on that side?

The passenger side just lifts up. If I remember right it has a lock. But if the CD changer is in the way you'll probably have to remove it

I have no clue what a neutral start switch is
>>
>>13970091
code 11 has nothing to do with AC, even then you would be seeing two flashes then a pause.

theres no 49,58,67 or whatever code to make the 11. if you see a pause after 11 flashes youre doing something wrong. it should continuously flash for no codes. the longest series you should see is 5 flashes before a pause for codes like 52,53.

It might even actually be a 52 or 53 (Faulty knock sensor)

idk where you're from but in US you can spend 12k on an s2k, or buy a 91 turbo for around 6k, may or not have mods already, and spend another 6k making it faster than an s2000. it's just hard to find one thats been taken care of and won't give you a bonus 6k in problems

I got mine as my "first car" (first car that I bought on my own, but I had been driving my parents car for 6 years already so I dont know if that really counts).

Snap oversteer is a meme, it's only going to be an issue if you're driving like an idiot. I find the understeer is a bigger issue with my AW11 than oversteer ever is, because the front end is so light. Just be careful in the rain, but other than that you have to be REALLY pushing the car to get the end to break loose on dry pavement.

The biggest danger an MR2 poses is to your wallet. Have money set aside to pay for repairs.

Ever driven one? Just because they're underpowered by today's standards doesn't mean they're not still fun to drive.

The supercharged models weren't that under powered either. 145 horsepower at 2490 pounds gives it a better power to weight ratio than an NA Miata while also producing an extra 40 foot-pounds of torque.
