I'am thinking about getting a 1991 300E. Its 2.6 Unfortunately. It has 90k Miles, 2nd Owner, Perfect Interior for 2.6k...This would be my first car. Would this just be a money heap?
>>
>Would this just be a money heap?
>25 year old Mercedes

Lol.
>>
Every old car is a money heap if you can't do work on it yourself

I've Heard many things especially about the 300E.
so I am not really sure

The W124 is "legendarily" reliable thanks to its technology being basically perfected in many ways. Its one of the last "mechanical" cars before the heavy computerization and electronification began

Its a perfectly affordable car if you do the wrenching yourself, parts are easy to come by and they ride just fine by todays standards

The 2.6 in these are just fine, and you don't get the feeling that its underpowered, while at the same time you're not going to win any races

From what I can see its in pretty good condition, judging by how the leather appears to have been properly moisturised and treated through its lifetime. The only thing I'd look "especially" into are checking the underside for spots of rust (it will have very light surface rust in parts ofcourse, I'm talking very visibly damaged metals and holes), and check the rubber & plastic tubing in the engine for cracking and general decay. Stretch them a bit, see if this makes slits in the rubber show or if the tubes & hoses are still in "one piece" if you get what I mean

another question. This car doesn't seem to have the headlight wipers... Would they be missing? or were they an optional package?

Yup, they would be - and they are an absolute bitch to install later as you'll have to get new lights with the mountings for them, cables, the relay and, not a 100% certain, I think you'll need the indicator-arm assembly for for it

This plastic part here detaches by two screws, one on the light housing itself and one on the fender I believe

>he doesnt know about 80s Mercedes

they're literally the most reliable luxury cars the company ever built hence why they're still used as daily drivers in even the shittiest countries of the world.

if you had any other mercedes to recommend for a first time car owner. What would it be?
>>
>>13953740

W201 - pretty much the same as the W124 in terms of reliability, but not as good looking and smaller

W202 - make sure it doesn't have any rust and make it an Elegance or higher
>>
>>13953744
this. they're ultra reliable but beware of rust, thats the only really issue with these cars.
>>
>>13953744
elegance? sorry if this a dumb question
>>
How does the Mercedes classing system work? For BMW I get that 3 series is the more economical and affordable mode,s 5 are the mid range and 7 are the big luxury ones. Is Mercedes the same?
>>
>>13953744

>W202
Enjoy your wiring harness fires.
>>
>>13953767
Yes. These shitheads are just posting chassis codes, like calling a BMW 3 series from the 90s an e36 to make them feel special. Mercedes is defined with a c for the smallest, E for midsize, s for full size.
>>
>>13953757

Higher options package

>>13953776
Just dont get a 92-96

>>13953767
Pretty much - C = 3-series, E = 5-series, S = 7-series and similar
>>
>>13953786
Thanks man. Which ones from the 80s and 90s are the more reliable ones? I'm guessing it's either the C or E class since the full luxury cars from any brand are the least reliable.
>>
>>13953798
>since the full luxury cars from any brand are the least reliable.

>what is Lexus
>>
>>13953794
really I should stay away from the 92-96? or was he memeing
>>
>>13953802
>Toyota engine

well duh
>>
Get the coupe or the 500E, both may actually be worth something in 30 years.
>>
>>13953811

Bio-degradable wiring didn't turn out so well. Insulation would crack and disintegrate, shorting wires

>>13953798
W124 with a non-turbo diesel engine would be the most reliable, but all of them are perfectly reliable and should not give you any issues as long as its been properly maintained and you keep the maintenance up
