Why are these things so rare? I've literally never seen one IRL, or on craigslist for that matter. Like I've never even seen NA Automatic shitheaps. I've seen 3000gts, 300zx all over the place but never a single supra. FD RX7s are the same.

Whats the deal? Did everyone snatch them up and destroy them 15 years ago when Fast And Furious came out?
>>
>>13953303
As an FD owner, you don't see FDs because they generally:

a) don't function
b) rarely driven for fear of ceasing to function

Its because they were very expensive when new
This applies to all of the turbo 90s jap cars
>>
>>13953327
So were the 300zx and 3000gt. The 300zx was almost as expensive as the Corvette for the base model and I think the 3000gt was the most expensive yet those are everywhere.

get scrapped i guess

I seen quite a few in the UK, possibly double digits
>>

I've literally never seen an A80 IRL, let alone a riced one.

Nah, they were just sold in relatively small numbers and are generally driven sparingly.

There were 16,500,000 Civics produced as of the 8th gen.

Less than 12,000 Supras were sold in the US between '93 and '98.

54k is the same price as a viper at the time

This is 85k~ inflation adjusted today
This caused way fewer numbers to be sold
For some reason people think they are like mid 90s camrys or mid 90s nissan altimas and should be priced like they are.
>>

>let alone a riced one.

There are fucking heaps of riced Supras in Australia. So many shitty ones around to the point where it's a real breath of fresh air to see a clean and tidy or tasteful one.

FD's though... don't see many of them around. Seems to be the case across the entire planet.

Whoa fuck I didn't know this. No wonder.1/4 of those are probably trashed, maybe even 1/2. The other 1/4 are probably race cars, so there's 5000, probably a lot less, supras in the US

And as a USbong, I've only seen 2 in the wild over the span of 17 years. I am deeply jealous of Australia.

There's like 4 of them that show up with regularity in San Antonio. 2 are performance shop cars and 2 are privately owned and stock from what I've seen.

Full fucking circle.

Fellow S/o/cal fag here, there's a red one that lives a city block from me. And that's the only one I've seen in years. My AW11 is more common, which came as a surprise to me.

The VR-4 and the Sypder models. The base and SL were fairly affordable.

Northern Michigan. Ive seen a bunch around and my neighbors owned two of them. Both engines seized

There were 92,000 AW11s in the US and ~11,000 A80s, not that surprising.

I've seen more JDM Supras around Vancouver than NA market supras. same with FD rx7's
>>
I have only seen 5-10 FDs "in the wild" meaning not in or around a meet. Probably the same for Supras.
>>
>>13953303
JZA80s and FDs are rare in the US because they only got sold here for 4 and 2 years, respectively. The 300ZX and 3000GT were sold for 6 and 9 years, and had relatively inexpensive base models available.

Because you live in America.

In Australia I see a supra every single day. Along with skylines, evos, wrxs, rx7s, pretty much any 90s turbo jap sports car is cheap and available here.

Stay pleb America.
>>
>>13953481

They were common as fuck in the 90s in Australia, now not so common but I definitely see them around every so often. My friend bought one for 4k back in 1998 he's still got it now has a 3sgte with a big to4z, laggy as fuck.
>>
I live in LA I see an old white guy drive one around the beach cities and one 20 year old drive one. Never seen another one, always these two guys
>>
>>13958174
Seriously? I live near Arcadia and they're not super common but I'll see one every once in a while (excluding the ones in my city I regularly see)
>>
>>13953303
What part of the country do you live in? The Bay Area and SoCal are littered with Supras. But yes, FDs are rare as fuck. Very limited numbers, very few are running, and most are only taken out for car shows and weekend cruises every once in awhile.
That being said, I plan to rebuild a MK IV turbo and daily it within the next 5 years.
>>
>>13958961
There are approximately 11,200 Supras and 13,800 FDs in the states, you have an equal chance of seeing both given a situation where they're evenly spaced in a given area.
>>
>>13958143
$4k in 98? Seems much given inflation. I got one for $6.7k a year ago in the US.
>>
>>13959012
Very few FDs are running or driven regularly. I've definitely seen more Supras out and about. Not like a lot more, but spotting an FD in the wild here happens less often it seems.

Unless you count the one I drive daily.

People make Supras from hell. They die. They throw em away.
People junk FDs because they ruin the engine.
>>
These getting common in Canada. I've seen 8 in Winnipeg this past summer all JDM Rhd. Sell for around 10-14k CDN. 15 year import rule.
>>
>>13953303
Are you serious Anon? You really don't get it?
Because the turbo one costs almost as much as a Viper ACR costs today. Rofl.

Imagine Toyota putting a turbo in the BR-Z so it gets 0-60 in under 4s and trying to sell that for $100k today. That's what the Supra was, except more bloated.

Mazda sold like 15,000 FDs because they were reasonably priced and fast even at the base trim.
Toyota only sold 4038 manual MKIV Supra Turbos in America.
If you count NA and automatic they sold 7201 more.

The FD was $32.5k new. Most were optioned around 35k-40k. An R1 I think was 40k.
The Supra was $45k for the turbo and $50k with leather interior and basic options that came with it.

A 911 Carrera GT was $66k in '93, for reference.

It was a fucking shitty value. Nearly Porsche 911 money for a TOYOTA. At least the LF-A was a sick ass car from an engineering perspective.

The Supra is also ugly and looks like a bloated DSM Eclipse with downs syndrome.
>>
>>13953334
What are you talking about? The Corvette was like 25% cheaper than the Supra.

The FD was priced around a base model Vette but Vette ZR-1 and Porsche 911 GT performance.

Only the final year of the 300zx was priced around a Supra.
>>
>>13957944
Nope.
FD were sold for 2.5 years and Supra for 5.5 years.

>>13957982
Its going to be hilarious when people have paid $35k for a '95 Supra turbo are going to be able to get a JDM imported one for 15k in just 5 years.
They think that car is going to hold their value just because of that FnF rice tax.
>>
>>13959035
In Orlando, I've only seen 2 Supras in my life and one wasn't turbo.

Besides my FD, I've seen about 5 others, and a shitload of FBs, a few of which are in amazing condition.

Some states make it hard/impossible to own an FD because of smog tests. Florida is like rotary bastion.
>>
>>13962592
Because the only reason someone buys a car is for resale?

40k new, in 98. That makes it not even 60k today. Not even close to a 100k. For comparison, a Corvette of the same year sold for 38k for the coupe, and 45k for the convertible.

>It was a fucking shitty value. Nearly Porsche 911 money for a TOYOTA.
Who gives a fuck what brand it was. It was fast for it's day, it's still even pretty fast. It was nearly as fast as 911 turbos in a straight line, which cost 100k when the Supra was new. More than twice as much. Of course the 911 was smaller, lighter and more luxurious, but it also cost over twice as much.

Yep. Exactly. That's why these things didn't sell much. They were overpriced as fuck.

The FD was the only of those Japanese "sub supercars" or "super sportscars", whatever you want to call them, that was reasonably priced. Though it was also the smallest of them, no cupholders, etc.
