ive had an s12 with the turbo CA18, N/A Ca20, and vg30. the only redeeming quality about the VG is it sounds nice. Its heavy, its hard to work on, since some of the routing for pipes/wires/intake are all fucked up, its just a bad example of what the car was supposed to be.
The RS and GP models with the N/A FJ20e make close to the same power, handle way better, and walk all over the VG cars. Honestly in my mind the only reason the VG cars exist was to get the VG into the rally car to run in production modified class, since they already proved the 240RS RWD car could not keep up with other group B rally machines.
At least it's a shitbox so nothing of value was lost.

I love the VG30ET, but it doesn't fit in the S12. Both figuratively and literally. It is too heavy so which ruins the weight distribution, and it is too big for the S12s engine bay so it is a bitch to work on. A turbo engine doesn't actually fit in the S12, so you have to use a remote turbo which is a pain in the ass. The VG30E is a good engine for the Z31, but not for the S12
the US really got screwed on S12 engine choice. We got the CA20E which was complete shit, the VG which I already talked about, and the CA18ET which is meh. It's cool having a turbo engine but they can't make much power without a lot of internal mods. in Japan, the S12 had the FJ and CA18DET which are both bad ass. I guess it's expecting, since all the S chassis cars got fucked in the US.

this guy redid the intake plumbing, moved the turbo to run a better designed collector, and has a new exhaust. 171 HP is not bad for a car that got 40MPG highway in 1984. i stumbled upon his car page once upon a time ago, and he claimed it was stock engine management and injectors (same ones are used in the ca20e, ca18e/t, vg30e/t so it should be plenty of flow)
A guy in NSW has a toyota supercharger on his ca20e Pintara and is making nearly 230hp at 7k rpm.
The ca single cam gets no love because its an old design with bad headflow, but it is a reliable motor, and lasts practically forever. Its never going to be a powerhouse, it was never designed with that in mind. But compared to other cars in its class is was perfectly acceptable at the time.
Compared to the 4cylinder mustang and the sr5 corolla hatch in America (the only real cars i see as contenders in the same class. the Impulse was too fast to be lumped in), it was perfectly on par with what either of those cars had. the Mustang was rated at 86hp for the 2.3l. The rolla had 110HP and 96ft-lbs. The ca20e had 102HP and 116ft-lbs.
The only real bad issue for the S12 at the time was it was so damn expensive : the XE ca20e car cost the same as the base model stang with a v8. The turbo was more pricey than the best mustang unless you special ordered it and removed all the power options and 1000 metallic paints and fancy wheels. (500$ for rain sensing wipers, 1000+ for the XE trim package which turbos had by default unless ordered without{ac power windows, 4x75 watt stereo, etc}
