Why did the Personal Luxury style of car die? I know Cadillac is slowly returning to it, but it seems like no one else is. Buick, Chrysler and Lincoln aren't doing anything like it anymore, even though it would fit their lineup perfectly.

Love my Bird, Handles great, smooth ride, comfy as fuck. Biggest downfalls were underpowered and not enough brakes under them. Easy enough to fix.

The ultimate in the personal luxury fad. Has all the 1930s neoclassical bullshit through the most leisure suited, cocaine snorting spin on things. And who could forgot the soft Corinthian leather,

Because Americans realized their cars were just large, not luxurious, and that you could get basically the same chassis, suspension, engine and cushy living room sofas in any number of much cheaper full size family sedans.

From 2008 until 2011, the market for personal luxury coupes was dead, the Monte Carlo having been killed in 2007. And from 2003-2007, the Chevy Monte Carlo was the only one still in the game.

The economic downturn lead to the entire car industry getting it's shit pushed in, but most notably Luxury cars because fucking duh. Companies thought that style would make them more relevant and appealing rather than just waiting for people to make money again.

Like, I like the understated yet refined look of the LS400/430, but the new ones with the "sporty" grill just turn me off. It's like the companies understand that sporty cars are lacking in the modern world, but instead of just making legit sporty cars they try to give all of their cars a sporty style.

It's like they're trying to all be Mazda or some shit, and it's really jarring.

They're back in a different form with big German stuff, to be honest. See also the E Coupe, 6 series, A7 2 door and, hell, even the Rolls Royce Phantom Coupe. Sure some of those things are marketed as "grand tourers", but spiritually I'd say an S coupe has a lot more spiritually in common with something like a Lincoln Continental than it does with a 300sl or an XKE.

Maybe I'm wrong, though.

Wait, there is no 2 door A7 "coupe". Geez, who'd have thought arbitrarily changing the meanings of words for marketing purposes could ever be confusing, right?

What if Chrysler got to rebadge the Challenger? What would they call it? Cordoba?
