Pic semi related.
My dd shitbox is getting a bit long in the tooth and I'm saving up for an upgrade.
Catch: I can only have one car and it must have the following features.
-wagon, hatchback, minivan (can camp in and haul bulky objects like some furniture or a bike)
-automatic (no fucks given, I'm not playing clutch pogo for a 50 mile stop n go work day with hills everywhere just because you like stick)
-20mpg city/30 highway minimum
-available for around 2k in sf bay area

Everything else is a bonus.
Looking at.
Ford Focus Zetecs
Subarus with the ej22
Hyundai Elantra
Corolla Wagon (good luck finding one though)
Post-97 Escort wagon

What others should I look at?

I actually used to drive a 960 and I really liked it but the mileage was pretty bad. Looking at the specs for the old redblocks they're even worse. Really underpowered too. They run though, and all dat space.
>>
So that's it? Volvos are all we can think of.
Are Suzuki Aeros any good? I'm seeing a lot if those cheap.

My newer truck has ≥180k miles and I'm not planning on trading it in yet. My older truck has ≥251k miles and I like it more than the newer truck.

No they're bad.

Have heated leather and comfort for commutes, just search volvo wagon

I don't think 2k is going to buy me a new car. I'm even willing to get something older or with more miles if need be, however the current shitbox is dying. Transmission slips, oil burns, cat knocks. It'll cost a lot to get it to pass smog next year if it even makes it. I'm looking for something similar but at least a little better.

I don't know what a Nissan truck has to do with what I'm asking. Although, I was ignoring crossovers earlier and a 90s rav4 gets good enough mileage to qualify. I don't like the idea of ff faux-SUVs but if it works it works.

I remember these times when the Temp and Fuel gauge were fuck huge to fill the optional tach spot

>Focus Zetec
M8, the only Zetec you should be getting in a Focus is the one in the SVT. Get a Duratec. The Focus also comes in Wagon form too.

Also, hard to sleep in the back of a Focus hatch. Doable, but won't be entirely comfortable.

Mileage, vehicle cost and availability are more important than performance. Only reason I even prefer zetech is because they don't drop valve seats like the se engines do. At the same time they only cost slightly more and are widely available. An SVT would cost me over budget for a non-running car.

Anything close to or over 75hp per ton would be powerful enough. I need to be able to go uphill, but not necessarily in a hurry. Speed and long range cruisability are bonuses.

There's a good reply. I neglected the Saturns because build quality is lousy, but it's worth a look. None of the little things matter.
I bet I can talk that guy down to 1500 or less.
>>
>>13960326
Yeah interior quality is ass, but in 75,000 miles of owning mine I only had to replace the starter, besides brakes/oil changes so they're worth a look imo. You also can't dent the doors, which is a plus for crowded parking.

I work Security. People routinely key/kick/door ding my car on purpose. It doesn't matter if it looks nice. After a month it will be at least a 5/10 on the hooptie scale.
>>
>>13960389
More specifically construction security. I camp out for the night but contractors just loooooove to nudge my car with their 6-ton backhoes and dump trucks on the way in/out. That or throw things down on it from the roof. I have dents and patched holes from that.

don't worry, if you buy a Saturn wagon, no one will key it...they'll leave it alone, but if anything they may feel sorry for you and leave you dolla bills. such is the life of saturn ownership
