and also invest in a full diagnostic software suite running on a dedicated laptop with a proper CANBUS interface so you can scan bmw ghost codes no problem.
a big problem is that you're not going to find much diy repair or maintenance support since 7-series owners don't care about that shit

also a proper canbus thing that can read bmw ghost codes is like $200 on ebay
but at that point the car will basically tell you everything that's wrong with it at any time, since it'll do a full self-diagnosis on demand

you don't need a dedicated laptop but you pretty much need Windows XP if you want to get it working. I use XP on a virtual machine. I guess the only reason to have a dedicated laptop would be to leave it in the car in case you need it. But you can get the BMWhat app on android or iOS and get a Bluetooth obd2 adapter for either or a microusb to usb cable for android and use a regular cable.
I paid $20 for my cable on Amazon which included INPA and the other tools (can't remember names). Works great on XP.

To add to this, Microsoft provides a Windows XP virtual machine for free. It's supposed to be used to test your web applications on Internet Explorer, but you should be able to use it for whatever.
