It's the cavalier of Volvos. Doesn't really matter since most POs are white trash and neglect the fuck out of their cars. If reliability is your primary concern look at 240s, 740s, and 940s. FWD Volvos are typically hit or miss while the RWD ones are almost always rock solid unless rusted to shit

It means they're probably the worst volvo you can buy. Mid 90s is where volvos started getting less reliable and more pricey in parts. A lot of the people that own them run them into the ground and then sell them on Craigslist for $1500 as a mechanics special because "it only needs maybe one part but it's super easy to fix ;)". A good 240 or 740 will get you by for cheaper in nearly every aspect of owning a car (think insurance, depreciation, maintenance). Both of the, are comfy and came standard with a lot of thoughtful engineering too

/o/ you have piqued my interest. i have been looking into 240's for the last couple of days. my mom drove an 89 245dl for the longest time. im looking into getting a cheap 2nd car, and i have seen most volvo 240s in my area under 2 grand, some under a grand. id like to make the sedan something i can take to offroad trails and whip up some dust.

what are some good resources for 240s? i have been looking around online and it seems like a dead scene.

The later the better usually since the last couple years (I think 87-93) came with airbags, ABS, and a few other things like better corrosion resistance. I have an 86 and instead of a normal 5 speed it has 4 gears and an electric "overdrive" that acts as a fifth gear. There aren't any bad ones by any means but just know the newest ones you'll find are 23 years old or so.

For saab I think you have the end of 9000s for 96 and 97. 9000 aeros are pretty great. The 98 900 and 99 9-3 are also very good, however the garret turbo is shit. 2000 to 2002 9-3s have sludge issues if oil wasn't synthetic and changed often, viggen and se are pretty good, the se has the viggen mitsu god tier turbo with large intercooler etc etc.

9-5s had the same sludge issues up till 2004 or 2005, so and 06+ aero is pretty good.

The new 9-3s are grand as well, you will want a full pressure turbo model.

If you are going to but a saab though.. the most saaby saab is the old 900 3 door.

I am saying that because it doesn't share parts with other models and only very few of them were ever made. I would be terrified that a small stone would crack the headlight, or somebody would put dents in the fenders or doors at the parking lot. Or if somebody would break into one, where would the new windows be available? In my eyes 780 is getting too exotic and a collector item to be DD. I am also explicitly jealous of you owning one and getting to drive one on daily basis.

make sure the auto trans is good and the engine has never overheated and you should be fine. The turbos are more fun but more hassle. It will never get great MPGs.

nope, it's not an S40

I had a chance to buy a 240 that was listed as a "volve", had a broken odometer from the last p/o (~8 yrs), had a history of electrical gremlins, was in an accident, and had an asking price of $1200 despite a sun-damaged paint job.

Sometimes the 240 isn't the best choice.

>White trash P/Os
I'd say that most of the volvos i've seen were loved family cars that got handed down to the kids and then got driven into the ground.

Yeah but it's a Volvo which as you can imagine was hammered into shape by Thor himself. These are dense cars and I haven't encountered any of those misfortunes yet. I do follow certain rules, like antisocial parking.

This rather good California example was a simple matter of the owner having apparently been trying to sell it for a while, but always asking too much. I won it on eBay yet still managed to talk him down a bit. Not everything has gone perfectly, the engine did need rebuilding at a point despite being a redblock and replacing the soundsystem was kind of a must. I just seized those opportunities to upgrade the hell out of them.

Well yeah, it was designed to be easy to fix for the most part. If AC is a big deal to you you'll have to find where it's leaking from and fix it (though you won't be needing it for a while). Parts are cheap enough so replacing the check valve (assuming the issue IS the check valve) should be quick and painless. I haven't ridden in an auto 240 since elementary school so I couldn't tell you how they drive.

>>13957780
both inner and outer pump are easy to replace. Only issue with the outer one is being careful not to fuck up the rubber line connecting it and the filter.,

Shit is like 80$ to replace. It can take some abuse though.

try the FCP euro or IPD websites; junk yards can be hit or miss if they only have two or three chassis to pull from. I like to make a list and then prioritize what i want to pull if it's a bit of a drive since I could spend all day grabbing parts off junked cars.

Also did exhaust gasket. Really helps calm the engines bouncing around at idle.

Bit harder than the check valve but still very easy, you can move the manifold enough to put the gasket in without removing all the injector shit on top.

If you do remove the injector stuff you get a good chance to clean the area between it and the engine which can get pretty gunked up.

Would also recommend replacing the coolant temp sensor while down there as they are known to go bad and can make your car run like complete shit if they do and are a pain to get at without removing the manifold.

I am continually baffled at how much worse Danes have gotten at driving in snow and harsh weather. There were literally people driving in the wrong lane with an obvious right-side road next to them. Nobody used their blinkers and many would stop halfway up a hill in their grand vitara fwd shitboxes to wipe shit off their windows. Meanwhile I just puttered along in my astra shitbox, having the time of my life as mr. Jensen was busy going all over the road, making peace with his god. My car may be a shitbox, but goddamn, it handles snow well. It always helps that I'm a snob and splurge on good tires.

My hometown/workplace is the large skiresort of Trysil, you might have heard of it... every time I see a car coming down the mountain roads with the red ring of death on its plate I'm always slightly worried and ready to perform some sick dodging manouver

I agree it's bad. THe other day I was making my way up a big hill, and a bus had jackknifed at the bottom, and along the length of the hill, people had stopped. Why? I don't know. It's so weird. My old volvo just drove steadily up the hill, and people were honking and looking in disbelief.

You don't know fear, friendo
>live in a sort of upscale town
>tight streets because they were designed hundreds of years ago and people park on both sides
>winter comes and they park an extra foot in to the street because of the snow banks
>cars ricocheting down one way streets. Going the wrong way.
>while not trying to bash off people's mirrors you need to look out for dentist's wives in SUVs barreling/sliding around the streets while applying makeup
>last year was the worst winter since the 70s (MA fag)
>stopped caring about people sliding into my rear bumper since it only does damage to their anyways
>waiting for the day I'm wiped off the face of the earth because some cunt in all seasons thinks she's invincible

Volvo mystery: my spare tire well on my 850 (aka the boot) keeps filling with water, and i have no idea how. the 5th door isn't leaking; i thought it might be the rain gutter downspouts or the rear window sprayer but both hoses seem to be pretty ok (no obvious wear or damage or visible water paths) although the rear sprayer doesn't work.

where else could it be leaking from, and is there a surefire way to troubleshoot the previously mentioned parts that anyone knows?

Should i just drill a hole in my boot?
>>
I've been rebuilding the head on my 850 for a while (combo lazyness and tight monies) and finally got around to getting shit together.

All new motor mounts all around, new lightweight crank pulley, all new water pump, tensioner, all new pulleys, belts, new brake pads and rotors, sway bars & endlinks

New exhaust valves, lapped all the valves, new valve seals, new seals all around, new gaskets, all the maintenance a man could ask for.

Fuck me I can't wait to get it back on the road.

I bought it for 1,000. Had a burnt exhaust valve and was in otherwise shit condition. I've brought this basic bitch back from the dead. It's literally the first car I've ever worked on in my life.

The outside is still in eh condition. Needs a new paintjob but that can wait.

I actually had a sedan first which I used for spare parts for the wagon.
