/o/,

I've searched on my local Craigslist for every possible car with pop-up headlights (I cross-referenced Wikipedia for a list of them). It's come down to:

>1988 and 1991 Buick Reatta
http://boston.craigslist.org/nos/cto/5327948125.html
http://providence.craigslist.org/ctd/5322712589.html
>1993 and 1994 Mercury Capri
http://providence.craigslist.org/cto/5329706452.html
http://providence.craigslist.org/cto/5330596483.html
>1991 MR2
http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/cto/5290599969.html

Out of these 5, which would you think is "best"? Have any stories or feedback? Are these cars too old? Which brand is best? Since Mercury is ded, would finding parts for them suck? This would be the first car I buy. It would be a weekend car. It's nearing the winter time here. I don't have a garage. The best I could do is pay to store it somewhere or ask my neighbor if I could tarp/cover it up and leave it there. Is the winter time a bad time to buy a car due to the damage and rust that comes along with the salt? Thanks.

First, I can't see buying a 20+ year old car to begin with.

Second, a 20+ year old car has already been exposed to all the salt that comes from driving around here (Bostonanon here).

Third, you can probably find Ford parts that fit but still... better plan on replacing a lot from the junk yards. (Route 128 Used Auto Parts is my go-to place).

But yeah, pop-up headlights. Had a 1969 Mercury Cougar with them.

MR2, if you can handle the MR chassis. Snap oversteer is not something to underestimate.
or the Buick Reatta.

The only downside to the Reatta is that it's FWD and uses the 3800 series 1 V6, which, while reliable, isn't very quick. You may be able to swap in a supercharged series 2 3800 though.

This was always in the back of my mind. But yo, this Buick Reatta looks cool. And again, I mean like, if I can buy an old cool car for under $3k that would last me 2 years -- I'd be so cool with that. Would love to drive one.

I tried driving stick once on an NA Miata. Couldn't fucking get past first gear. Stalled everytime. It was my friend's car, so he said we can try again whenever. Want to do it soon, too.

I have used a "Tiptronic" transmission before on a 2015 Corolla, and the shifting was so smooth and felt SO good. Hnnng. I know it's not the same thing since there isn't a clutch but damn.

Also: how many miles is too many on a car? This 91 Reatta has 175k on it.
Also, I just asked this guy for a VIN number and I hope he doesn't decline. Had a few folks not want to toss the me VIN via email, or want me to see the car first.

>STALLING is my worst fear fa ms
Stalling doesn't actually jurt the car, it's just embarrassing. I've been driving stick daily since 2011 and I still stall on a rare occasion. It's part of the learning curve. You have to learn how to balance the amount of clutch with the amount of gas.
Every car is different in that respect.
>>
>>13926693
I live in Massachusetts though, and people would get so pissed if I stall all the way back home & down the street kek
>>
>>13926674
>So like I don't know whether I should buy a local shitbox near me to attempt to drive on back home and just play around with it

Look at it this way, either live with the shame of stalling it a few times trying to drive it home or live with the shame of buying slow piece of shit you will outgrow in a month when you learn to drive stick.
>>
>>13926706
I live in Connecticut and have plenty of family in Massachusetts. You'll be fine.

true that
couple quick questions instead of making a new thread (though it might be helpful for some):
How do I know when to shift? how do I brake? must I downshift at the beginning when I am just learning?

thanks
>>
>>13926723
>How do I know when to shift?
Unless you're trying to get up to speed quickly, shifting at 2500 rpm (in most cases) is perfectly fine
>how do I brake?
pop the shifter in neutral and brake normally, sit at the light/stop sign in neutral, than shift into first when you need to go again.
>must I downshift at the beginning when I am just learning?
It's not as scary as it seems. Trust me.

After a while, you won't need to look at the tachometer to tell when to shift. If you're good enough, you can tell when to shift by the exhaust note. Having a tachometer is a huge help with learning.
On another note, there are a lot of cars with shift lights for beginners that will come on and tell you when to shift based on how you're driving. My Saturn does it and most GM vehicles from the 1990's on do it. I know others do it. It's a fairly common feature.
>>
>>13926723
>How do I know when to shift?
You can either watch the Tachometer or just listen to the engine.

>how do I brake?
You don't need to brake and gas at the same time

>must I downshift at the beginning when I am just learning?

Rarely will you need to downshift, in my experience.
>>
>>13926766
Thank you man! I wanted to know about the braking part, and coming down to a slow stop. I DID hear about what you said about putting it in neutral and braking normally, and that did sound awesome, but I think someone on /o/ said to downshift instead or something like that, I dunno.

So if I needed to make a really quick brake, same thing? Neutral then just stomp on brake?

Also, any tips on actually STARTING the car and rolling? When I was in the NA Miata, I could not get it to start and go. I just couldn't for whatever reason. I guess I wasn't doing it well and matching. And how quickly do clutches burn out and wear out? I don't wanna buy a car and ruin the clutch
>>
>>13926802
>So if I needed to make a really quick brake, same thing? Neutral then just stomp on brake?
Yup. Keep in mind if the car doesn't have ABS, you have to hold the pedal just before the wheels lock up. If the wheels lock up, you'll just slide.
>Also, any tips on actually STARTING the car and rolling?
hold the RPMs at like 2,000 RPM and slowly let off the clutch. This works until you get acclimated to where the clutch's bite point is.

It's near Mountain ave. It's got WAT stickers on the rear hatch you wouldn't mistake it.

Goodluck with pop ups. Also the winter can be a better time to buy because no one is looking to get sports cars now. You might be able to get a better deal due to that. Just get a stick it's really not that hard. I bought pic related not knowing stick and got it down good within a couple days.

How did your car(s) do last year with all the snow? My dad's 07 Sentra got some ugly rust in the bottom. Looked very ugly. But it wasn't too bad with the amount of snow we got. Seriously, we don't have a driveway, so we just park it on the narrow street that's -of course- packed when snow starts falling and everyone battling for spots. Car was literally covered top to bottom with snow. It was ridiculous. There was so much snow that it took over 2 parking spaces the neighborhood couldn't even remove all the snow.

That's my one worry, you know? If I buy a car now, and have it get beaten up during the winter time.

luckily I have a driveway but I just kinda drove it through the winter when I had to and got rides when I could. I had just bought the car and it got through it alright. The only thing that happened was sliding on some ice into a curb. Luckily I just got a flat. Rust happens to any car here sadly. I'm storing mine in the winter at a family members garage and driving a beater 90s blazer I just bought.

My best advice would be to just get something and drive it sparingly or not at all if there's snow/salt on the ground. Get a winter beater next winter.

No. Just depress the clutch and brake at the same time. If you need to make a really quick brake you do not need to shift into neutral.

You actually shouldn't shift into neutral unless you're at a stop.

Press the clutch pedal with your foot. (Thus depressing the clutch.)
Brake at the same time.

Ideally you should start braking first, then depress the clutch once you need to. But you can just push both pedals at the same time.

If you're coming to a stop for a longer time, you can shift into neutral.

Or if you need to get going again relatively quickly, you can just shift into first once you're at the standstill.

Or if you are still barely moving and realise that you didn't really need to stop, you can shift into second and then keep driving.
