I wanna buy an RX-7 FC but all the buyers guides I can find are about the FB/FD.
What do I need to know? I know all about rotaries and apex seals and Doritos and such, but besides that are there any common problems specific to the FC?
Turbos are out of my price range and I'm fairly sure they're extinct in North America.
Is 3500$ too much to pay for an S4 with about 100k miles, well detailed maintanence/oil changes, but some interior and exterior wear and tear? I think it's the less fancy non-lsd trim or whatever you call that one.
>>
Buy a 944 instead. Replacing the timing belt is easier than rebuilding a rotary.

>buy a 944
No.
Nope.
Don't wanna go bankrupt.
>>
>>13924581
then why are you buying a rotary?
>>
>>13924581
????????????????????????
Get a fucking miata if you don't want to go broke, you mong.
>>
>>13924569

Lol you fucking pleb.. Fc were better then a 944 in just about every facet. Sure its a fucking dorito but with proper maintenance an NA rotary can last just as long as a piston motor.

I'd check things like suspension bushes, CV joints, drive cold and feel for clutch shudder possibly indicating new clutch soon, gear box mounts, engine mounts, signs of a hard life really.. Does it blow smoke? Check what the owner did to maintain it? Was it premixed, how often oil changed, how often was it redlined etc
>>
>>13924606
Rotaries aren't unreliable as long as you continually shove oil down their throats. Besides that all the electronics, suspension, etc. Are way more reliable than the 944's equivalents
>>
>>13924606
On an rx7 all you worry about failing is the engine. In a 944 you have to worry about almost every system failing

>fc were better then a 944 in just about every facet
First of all, *than
Second of all, WHAT?

>a Japanese-made Mazda is more reliable than an 80's Porsche
What about that statement is weird to you exactly?
>>
>>13924560
Did you check fc section of rx7club? Do it

>>13924606
Because rotsry only needs a 2k rebuild every 20 years, 944 needs 2k worth of work done once a month
>>
>>13924620
Dumbass, the fc is just a cheap japanese imitation of the 944 with a dorito in the front
>>13924623
944's are reliable as fuck, they have little 4 cylinder engines, old proven tech, you just have to CHANGE THE BELTS but people are to stupid to do it themselves then get mad when someone else wants a grand to do it.
>>
Didn't turtletron have a 944 that he said was an unreliable turd
>>
>>13924649
Performance? I've never driven a turbo rx-7 but I've driven both a turbo and non turbo 944. The non turbo 944 was still faster in ever way(at least had the feeling so I could easily be wrong).
>a japanese wankel powered FR vehicle from the 80's is more reliable than 80's porsche
Maybe marginally. How do you even know the 944 is unreliable? Did someone on /o/ tell you?
>>
>>13924665
Every time I have read "944" anywhere on the internet/magazines etc. Poor reliability and expensive repair is in the same paragraph. I don't care about performance my gripe with the 944 vs the FC was the reliability alone.
>>
>>13924650
>the fc is just a cheap japamese imitation of the 944

Um they designed it off the previous gen rx7 dickweed and the fd was based off that so on so forth, not like its uncommon for an 80s sports car to be a rwd hatch with pop-ups
>>
>>13924652
>>13924687
Woopsies wrong tag :^)
>>
>>13924560
Ok OP I've actually owned many FCs
3500 is a good price for 100k miles.
Mine had over 200k when I sold it and was running great.
Common problems - the idiot lights may not work correctly. It's a very simple fix if you know how to solder. The TPS likes to get out of whack. That's an easy fix as well with a test light.
Check OMP lines for cracks or shoddy repair. They are important.
Don't expect the rear wiper to work or the intermittent and fast front wiper to work.
Other than that S4s are super solid cars.
S5 had a couple more problems because of more electronic junk.
Look for a GXL for the LSD or at least a 5 lug for the big brakes

rx7 can't even beat a 924
>>
>>13924679
Which is why I'd buy a miata if I can't afford to upkeep either of the things.
All my friends who have ever owned 944's(3 whole friends) never really had a hard time keeping them on the road. I'm not going to say it's cheap to own(comparatively to a civic or some shitbox), but they're not THAT bad.

Also, buy a miata and stfu

>bench racing
It out performs the Porsche.

FC is superior to the 944 in every way, especially handling. The only people who would think otherwise are deluded Porschephiles.

1986 Mazda RX-7 GXL 0-60 mph 8.4 | Quarter mile 16.3
1990 Mazda RX-7 Turbo II 0-60 mph 6.2 | Quarter mile 14.7
1990 Mazda RX-7 GTU 0-60 mph 8.5 | Quarter mile 16.5

1982 Porsche 944 0-60 mph 8.2 | Quarter mile 16.2
1986 Porsche 944 Turbo 0-60 mph 5.9 | Quarter mile 14.4
1988 Porsche 944 Turbo S 0-60 mph 5.4 | Quarter mile 14.0

NA 944 is roughly the same as NA RX-7 FC.
Stock Turbo/Turbo S 944 are both significantly faster than the stock Turbo II RX-7.

Tuning wise, you get way more power out of the RX-7 way cheaper, and it's more reliable and way cheaper to maintain.

My 86 GXL did 15.9 stock at 5000ft
My buddies 87 T2 did 14.2 stock
>>
>>13926130
Bone stock? Haven't even removed emissions shit?

Removing emissions shit gives you a lot more fuel economy and power on rotaries compared to other cars.
>>
>>13927432
Yes bone stock

Why the fuck can't 16 year olds just get a summer job?

No expenses, all that money in your pocket. I had like 6 grand in the bank when I was 17.

If you want a sports car, earn it.
