Sup /o/

Just got 1000$, gonna spend it on a new P.O.S. weekend warrior. Using it for street race purposes. Anything I need to look out for in a super cheap car to make sure its not gonna blow up at the starting line? I'm going to be building it a bit obviously but I don't want to miss some glaring problem in the car that I can't fix.

Thank

Make sure the car is cold when you go to start it the first time. Whip it around a little, let it warm up, make sure you aren't overheating and the oil and coolant stay in the places where they are supposed to be.

Otherwise if you're spending $1000 and are totally gonna fuck this thing up, look for one with a decent drivetrain that isn't rusted out. You can save a lot of money buying something with beat up bumpers and seats a little torn. And you can replace that stuff easilt with junkyard parts or aftermarket parts for cheap.

What are you looking at for $1000?
>>
Civic with a couple of simple mods.
>>
94-99 mustang GTs can be had really cheap
>>
>>13923312
Get a $500 foxbody and swap in an LS for $500 and an afternoon
>>
>>13923368
That doesn't make it turn though.

live in a super sparse area; not many options. I've seen a few things online, one in particular caught my eye http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?zip=25801&endYear=2016&showcaseOwnerId=0&startYear=1981&engineCodes=8CLDR&engineCode=8CLDR&transmissionCode=MAN&transmissionCodes=MAN&searchRadius=0&maxPrice=1000&listingId=393192803&Log=0 but I haven't had a chance to look at it in person

>>13923350
looking for something with a lot of base power that I really don't have to mod. Then again I know a lot of honda boys in the local scene. Other than turbo what kind of mods would I want to do to a civic to make it vroom vroom faster?

>>13923360
I was thinking the same thing, wish I could find a 5.0 fox body it would be unstoppable

>>13923368
I live in a shitty area, is there a dedicated site to buying engines like there is for used cars? I'd assume something like ebay but even if I find it, how do I make sure its good? I've never bought an engine before.
>>
basically LS swap a fox body or a volvo 240
add a cheap turbo-
pull on lambos and GTRs

Don't be afraid to take a trip if you see anything on Chicago CL that looks good. Otherwise V8+manual, could be fun as long as it isn't rusting through completely.

Ask about the last time the clutch was done too. Idk about the turd gens, but getting a clutch done is always expensive if you don't do the labor yourself.

>>13923458
thats no where near me, im willing to make a trip though. In wv

According to /o/ an LS costs about $500 and the swap takes about an afternoon.
Also lurk more faggot.

I'm aware it's a maymay.

So you're pretty new then.
>>
>>13923478
ebay has a bunch of $500 5.3s dude
>>13923505 LS1 are more expensive because they are aluminum
the truck 6.0 are cheaper, stronger, and will make more power than an LS1 anyways

Top jej. What's your budget for the buildup? It takes serious money to "build it a bit". A 1k car is going to have problems everywhere.

by build I mean getting it working fully and throwing in a cheap turbo or some shit. Not going to be my daily if you know what I mean.

Pretty much... for $1000 a Panther is going to be your best bet for finding a decent running car with at least a little bit of fun factor.

I've got a cvpi and honestly, I'd search for a mid 90s or older town car if I were you. They're far less desirable and at $1000 chances are it will be in better shape than Vic in the price range. Only Vics worth paying decent money for are 04 and up. If you're getting one on the chassis before the update, you may as well get a TC, MGM, LX.

90 TCs had the lopo 5.0. As did the later box MGMs and LTDs. They're turds stock, but have some performance potential if you put some cash into them.

If you're going that route, look into Lincoln Mark 8's. They came with the DOHC 4.6, punched out 290 horses stock, and the lsc package came with 3.73 gears.

Drop in some 4.56 gears, get a high stall torque converter, and you have yourself a bad ass sleeper. They're ugly as fuck though.

I used to think this, but they really grew on me.

I'm trying to get into them, but I love the Mark 7's way too much. They have the classic look and the 5.0 HO is pretty sweet.

So I just found I really nice-ish car, but it has an engine knock. Anyone care to explain what that is? I've never heard that before.
