far more diesels in the hands of farmers. for every one some small dick redneck drives there's 10 sitting on a farm actually being used

No. As with everything else, Toyota makes the best diesel engines.

International definitely made lots of indestructible engines up until Navistar and emissions. The new stuff is complete garbage though.

And everybody loves Detroit Series 60 diesels. Not sure how the newest Daimler Detroits are though. Seems like these days Cummins is the way to go if you buy a new truck.

I have a love/hate relationship with those engines.

They won't die. And for that very reason, Pepsi refuses to replace a bunch of the shitty old Internationals in our fleet.

Mercedes is pretty similar to detroit from what I hear. I don't work on either of them though.

Paccar is a good engine but it's pretty much a computer with a few bits of metal

Mack is pretty reliable but absolutely sucks to work on

Cummins is easy as fuck to work on but have aftertreatment issues.

I have done 3 cummins isx overhauls in the past 4 months.

Daimler aka Mercedes bought out Detroit Diesel. Some newer Coca Cola Freightliners have a badge that says "Powered By Mercedes Benz" on the side of the cab. Now you can pretty much only get Detroits in Freightliners and Western Stars. So if you want a Kenworth or Pete without a Paccar from the factory, you get a Cummins.

Kw with a cummins is probably my favorite combo for ease of service

International, freightliner, western star, and peterbilt all have their little quirks that make them somewhat to much harder to service.

Volvo is light on fire and douse in kerosene tier bullshit.
>>
>>13923216
We have an Isuzu diesel in our Topkick, other than needing the stupid dealer scan tool to set the injector fueling values when you replace the fuel injectors it's been a dream.

>>13923315

>>13923361
>>13923595
Mercedes bought Detroit right around the 2006 emissions bullshit when Penske wanted out. For a while they just rebadged the MBE900 motor as a Detriot. It was a good motor but it never made competitive power IMO. I used to drive a box truck with one though and it lasted over 400k with minimal maintenance - I think the most expensive thing to happen was the EGR cooler puked around 300k to the tune of around $2500.

The new Detroits seem to be getting favorable reviews though; hopefully they'll stay a reliable choice.

Why do diesel engines have all of these funny names and terms?
>Cummins
>Powerstroke
>Detroit Diesel

The list goes on
>>
>>13931431
I have one of the few factory turbo 7.3 IDIs, I just changed the injectors on it at 300k and overhauled the injection pump. All the injectors cost about what one powerstroke injector would cost.
>>
>>13931532
Powerstroke because marketing. T444E just doesn't sound as sexy on a pickup. Also Navistar probably has that trademarked.

Detroit Diesel and Cummins are just the engine manufacturers. What would you rather call them?
>>
>>13931532

Detroit Diesel is literally what it means

They're diesels built in Detroit
>>
>>13931539
>What would you rather call them?
Something that can't be mistaken for a sexual innuendo. I feel really stupid when I say "Detroit Diesel" in front of my friends and everyone starts giggling.
