Hello everyone, my name is Rudolph Diesel.

I'm going to be unveiling my new engine design at the 1911 Paris World's fair for everyone to see.

I've created a more efficient engine than the typical gasoline engine, it also doesn't require specialist fuels to run and can run on any combustible oil (I'll be running mine on peanut oil). It's my hopes that this will free the world from reliance on petroleum based fuel.

I sure hope the petroleum companies don't try and assassinate me, steal my invention, and create a new petroleum based fuel called "diesel" and design future cars to only run on this type of fuel without extensive modification.

Petroleum companies here.

We're going to just sell all the crap left over from Petroleum cracking we couldn't sell before, as petrol engines wont run on it, and call it "Diesel" we win again.
>>
>>13902954
Yeah but if you just poured it away instead, you'd have to pay twice as much for petrol instead. Byproduct diesel is co-funding the petrol production.
>>
>>13902962
If we were following Diesels original wishes petroleum companies wouldn't even exist anymore.
>>
>>13902974
And instead we'd have to refine our own peanut oil for $20 a gallon in our backyards?
>>
Greetings, and good day!

Please disregard me while I deposit fecal matter upon the public's perception of the diesel engine, and also your work.
>>
>>13902990
Peanut oil was cheaper in 1911 than gasoline.

If we had decided as a species to follow diesels plan and develop all diesel engines to run on any flammable liquid we'd have the infrastructure in place for it to be cheap today.

But instead we decided to go down the fossil fuel route and now we're fucked.
>>
>>13902917
>1911
Never forget.
Ron Paul /b/.
>>
>>13903011
Lol no. Petroleum is essentially a free resource. Peanuts have to be grown. Takes a lot of water and a lot of land. Vegetable oil would have never been able to keep up with the demand.
>>
>>13903019
doesn't have to be peanut oil, could be any flammable liquid. Unrefined heavy oil, alcohol etc

Diesel fuel is one of the biggest scams of the 21st century.

I rapped that last line outloud.
>>
>>13902974
Implying the epa would let us burn whatever we want....
>>
>>13903047
In this reality the oil companies wouldn't have bribed the EPA to make up this law
>>
>>13903025
Are you dense or what? Alcohol = plants. Vegetable oil = plants.

those all have to be grown.

petroleum was already grown millions of years ago, it's a free resource. that's why it's the dominant energy source until we be flyin around up in space n shit harnessing the sun ya feel me.
>>
>>13903064
It's the dominant energy source because the powers that be want it that way
>>
>>13903025
also
>unrefined heavy oil
kek

enjoy your 0.5 miles to the gallon of smelly engine clogging unrefined oil fuel.

What historians try to bury is the fact that this would have made George Washington Carver the world's first billionaire, a black man and inventor of the peanut.
>>
>>13903068
or maybe it's not a conspiracy and its the dominant energy source because it's free, cheap to refine, and packed with BTUs

it's on it's way out, in this century, but in the 20th century it couldn't be beat.
>>
>>13903072
they steelin our history!
>>
>>13903084
You really don't think the oil companies killing Diesel, inventing a new fuel that happened to be called "Diesel" (so people make the connection between the fuel and the engine) and bribing all engine makers to develop diesel technology along the lines of using this new fuel (to the point where any diesel engine made in the last 20 years cannot run on anything but diesel) isn't a conspiracy theory?

99% of people don't even realise that Diesel engines don't require Diesel fuel to work. If that's not a conspiracy I don't know what is.
>>
>>13903084
it could be worse
coal is horrible. i have been to beijing and its horrible. everyone burns coal to heat their buildings, to power electricity, and industry you smell it everywhere and the sky is always gray.

and to think they used to power trains by this garbage. horrible ill take diesel anyway
>>
>>13903084
>cheep easy and dirty
bit like how coal is still lingering
its just a shame that energy currently available is not being used most effectively to create new sources
>>
Why is petrol still a thing when diesel engines are more efficient?

They were more efficient than gasoline in 1911 and they're even more efficient now.

Seems like the oil companies have something to do with this: "Yes yes goyim you want a petrol engine, yes burn through all that fuel so you buy more quicker".
>>
>>13903102
My '98 e350 runs on either diesel or straight veggie oil.
>>
>>13903102
Diesel is anything that combusts with compression only. Calling petroleum based diesel fuel "diesel" is just colloquial.

All diesel engines require diesel fuel to work.. whether that diesel comes from petroleum or vegetable oil doesn't make a difference.

the reason they are called diesel is because of him inventing the technology.

you seem to think that petroleum based diesel and vegetable based diesel are different.. they are both refined oils. one is just easier and cheaper to produce.

i hope youre trolling to be honest.
>>
>>13903120
Petrol engines are cheaper because the block doesn't have to be as sturdy and it's easier to make them met emissions. They're also more powerful for a given weight.
>>
>>13903120
because gasoline is cheaper and the government subsidizes ethanol and because diesels cost more. diesels are more economical if in fleet vehicles which is why they are in fleet vehicles.

the oil companies own both the gasoline and diesel fuels.. they dont care which sells..

in the US if you aren't getting 300k miles and commuting daily with your car you aren't going to see the cost benefit of diesel that's why they aren't popular.

>mfw /x/tards really believe everything is a conspiracy
>>
>>13903152
>gasoline is cheaper

Only because the oil companies and government made it that way.

Diesel is all the crap left over from petroleum cracking, it's worthless as anything but fuel for diesel engines and should be cheap as fuck.

Diesel fuel used to be cheaper than gasoline in my country until the government said "OH SHIT WE'RE NOT RAKING IN AS MUCH TAX BECAUSE DIESEL CARS FILL UP LESS QUICK TAX IT MORE!"
>>
>>13903127
>you seem to think that petroleum based diesel and vegetable based diesel are different..

Try running a new diesel car on veg oil. The ECU will throw a fit.
>>
>>13903170
Mod the ECU then
>>
>>13903167
Diesel is cheaper in California than gas and still no one buys it. Because like I said it's not worth the initial cost. It's not that much more economical to make up for the cost of the engine. And the tighter emissions get the less the gap between gas and diesel is going to be.

Do you honestly think there's some kind of conspiracy to sell people gasoline (something that costs the oil companies more to refine)? Why wouldn't they just make diesel only and hike up the price and save themselves a shit load of money.

I honestly don't understand wtf you're even thinking considering they own both diesel and gasoline so they aren't losing money no matter what you buy.

Fuel is a necessity these days, they can price it at whatever they want and you will still buy it. Welcome to capitalism.

>>13903170
That's because they have different stoic values... and your post is completely irrelevant, but thanks for sharing.

You'd think Rudolf would be able to spell his own name correctly.
>>
>>13903524
The reason why no one buys diesel cars is because almost nobody makes diesel cars. You have Volkswagen, Chevy, and luxury brands that no sane middle class person would bother with.

A significant number of the cars that Volkswagen sold in the US were diesel, but they're a relatively unpopular brand because of cost and reliability concerns. Chevy has a diesel in the Cruze but nobody bothers with it because who the fuck buys a Cruze? Besides, a Cruze eco makes ALMOST the same MPG while being considerably cheaper.

Note that people who bought diesels were generally happy with them, the Ram 1500 diesel sold much better than expected, the GM twin diesel trucks are expected to sell fairly well despite being stupidly overpriced, and Chevy is still planning to sell a Cruze diesel in the future.

That being said, a large reason why diesel isn't popular in California specifically is because there are hybrids everywhere that make the same fuel economy, are cheaper, and run on regular old gas which is typically (though not currently) less expensive than diesel.
