For around $5000, you'll probably only find small hatches.
I had a look on carsales this morning for a manual around $5k, and most results were Mitsubishi colts, renaults, Kia's and ford fiestas.
Mind you, most were over 120,000km mark.
I'd suggest getting something like a Toyota Camry or old Holden commie as parts are generously available.
My first car was a Mazda 626 efini. Imported.
Couldn't even take parts from Ford Taurus/ Mazda 626 because the JDM I had had different parts entirely.
I junked it after it started shitting out and now drive a Toyota aurion.
Of course, the BEST option you can have is if one of your parents gives you their car wherein they can buy a new one.

Magna, Camry, Pulsar, Mercedes C or E. Stay away from Falcons and Commodores. If you're feeling fancy, an old Volvo. Generally a good registered and roadworthy car will only cost 2k and maybe a little more in parts that need replacing.

A used Honda makes a great first car. They're reliable, cheap to fix if something does go wrong and can be fun to drive if you get a manual. They don't have enough power to kill yourself either(you're on /o/ so I assume you drive like an asshole).
