Hey /o/
I'm gonna go look at some outback sports this weekend. Anyone have any tips on what to look for? Common problems?
I'm looking for a practical, fun daily driver. Anyone own one of these? Would love to get some insight from you guys.
There's nothing fun about these cars they are not only slow but the suspension and weight distribution makes them handle like utter crap.

Headgaskets. The 2.5 Sohc in these used an inferior headgasket and it's known to be a problem. It'll be fun in the snow and you can use almost all the 2.5rs or even some next gen wrx parts on it as the chassis Is very similar

I had one until the headgasket pussed out at 125k
They seriously have a 2.5 that makes as much power as my miatas 1.8.
also the dohc motor has its cams positioned over the head bolts so you have to remove them to remove the head.
also the inner fender/engine bay is 1/4 " away from the cam cover.
also the motor literally sits in front of the front wheels.
only redeeming quality is that you can throw dogs in the back and oil changes are easy.

If you need a wagon then a WRX if pretty much your only choice in the US market.
Alternatively any one of the ~2500-2700lb ~150-200hp sedans that exist.

This is going to be a daily driver so I don't need a lot of power. I know these wagons don't get the best mpg but I'm okay with that.

If you want a better looking car sure. For you application the differences will be extremely minimal.
My advice is find a Sohc cam car where the head gasket had been done and stay away from the dohc car.
The Sohc phase 2 engine has better bearing placement than the dohc.

Op if you wanna rally this and dd it, as long as it had a good motor it will do fine in whatever you want to do with it. Ie) rallycross. Stage rally is another thing but if you're trying to stage rally any dd stock car you're going to get your ass kicked wrx or not.

All listed are or have a turbo option...it's like you're not even trying
rear wheel well rust is really the biggest thing to look out for. MAF sensor and o2 sensor like to shit out. change the plugs when you buy the car.
