Hi friends, any Model T owners? I am seriously considering buying one soon because they seem like a lot of fun to drive, own, and maintain. Any tips on what to check when looking at a potential buy?

Hey OP, I've been looking at some too, as they do seem like a lot of fun. That, and I fixed a transmission pedal setup from one that I found in the desert. Have you looked into how you actually drive it? It's hardly anything like the manual transmissions we see today. As the car is almost 100 years old, try to make sure the wheels haven't rotted and that the steering box isn't worn. Other than that, be prepared to change the bands in the transmission. Bring a bottle of 3-in-1 if you're getting one of the more beat-up ones.

I have an idea. You must purchase a model T and be the first person to ever hellastance and rice one out. Also turbo it if that's even possible. The boomer butthurt could power planets.
>>
>>13889945
My grandfather had 3 of them when he was younger. I am told they were stored away in a shed when some teenagers broke in and vandalized them, smashing them up and shooting them with .22's. What is wrong with some people?
>>
My old shop teacher had one. Totally original. even the tires. The seats have horse hair in them for padding. He said you have to back them up hills because they have gravity fed carburetors or something. The tire tread is made of the words "Goodyear"
>>
I wonder, could one of these withstand the thrust of a modern engine, even if small? I understand they have like 3HP engines
>>
>>13890630
It was arounnd 20hp actually
>>
>>13890630
given a good condition frame, you could probably put a small modern engine in there, if you replaced the driveline and gearbox sure.

The main points of weakness in these isnt so much the frame but the driveline itself and the wheels.

That said most of my experience is with something a little newer (pic semi related, gramps built his own replica but is running an old datsun straight 6 (modern when he built the thing)

>>
>>13889945
Not a T, but I have a 1929 Phantom, keeping that engine running is a fucking chore, and it burns through starters like a pot smoker
Top speed is around 80 to 100 km/h
Brakes are shit and can barely hold the car once it gets going so you are always with a foot on the brake as soon you stop accelerating
Its fun to drive, mostly because of how raw of a car these old fords are, the T must be even more fun considering it doesn't have a standard driving input like later models
>>
Unrelated but I saw a buick super woody yesterday

Could you even drive a model t practically in modern traffic. I remember jeremy Clarkson driving one and he said it only had 2 speeds slow or 40mph ish.
>>
>>13891393
yes you cant but it would be a PITA without some after market help on the spark advance since you dont want to have to adjust that shit constantly as you are driving. I know an individual that DD's a model A. Its surprisingly good on fuel (like close to 30 mpg), just very slow getting up to top speed and he sticks to back and frontage roads.
>>
>>13890343
Yup I've watched a lot of videos on how to start and drive them, looks really cool and not that hard to do. Thanks for the tips!
>>
>>13890682
Is the blower functional?
>>
>>13889945
OP, only get a model T if your absolutely sure of it. There are no standard controls for anything, and they can only do about 40-45mph. If you want a classic car like that my suggestion would be a Model A, the controls are pretty much the same as a modern car and they can do 60-65 max so at least it's more drivable in today's roads.
>>
>>13894326
I'd love a Model A, they're considerably more expensive than a T though. Noted...might just wait and get one of those instead. The two I were tracking online sold instantly so now I have no leads on a cheap T anyway
>>
>>13891393
How are those spokes even strong to hold that wheel?! I suspect that this is a Photoshop work.
>>
>>13889945
I've always wondered what happens when a part has to be replaced. Seriously, what the fuck can you do? It's a century old.
>>
>>13896648
Has an aftermarket.

Ford might also be like Mercedes and keep a part index for all their vehicles since the foundation of the company.

Hell, the Model T pretty much launched the idea of a vehicle aftermarket.

Oh christ, someone's going to say this about the cars we talk about today.

>as the EG Civic hatch is almost 100 years old, try to make sure the VTEC still kicks in as they said in those simple times
>>
>>13897270
>the transmissions used in those days were nothing like our transmissions nowadays
>they even had 3 pedals
>>
>>13897278
Future cars won't have them, they'll all be electric.
>>
I kind like them but I wouldn't buy one because they look cartoonishly stupid
>>
>>13897350

>tfw future self driven cars have minimal accidents so windows become big again

Step in the right direction to me.
>>
>>13896800
No, the many coach and buggy builders who were watching their businesses die from car purchases extended their existence by doing custom work on cars. Like building the wooden bodies for bus and truck style vehicles. You didn't need to buy a Ford to take a rolling chassis to a buggy builder to build a woody for you. Ford didn't offer extras, but the other automakers charged too much and that's why the aftermarket started, to keep cost down.
>>
>>13897485
The first aftermarket water pumps and assorted performance parts were for the Model T.
>>
>>13897278
On the T, the petals were clutch/low gear forward, reverse, and break

Don't some companies make aluminum bodies from scratch of these so you can build them up?

There's more to the aftermarket than that, especially back then. You wanted a trunk, they literally built a trunk and a rack to hold it on the back of the car. And that kind of stuff started before Ford built the model T.
>>
>>13901341
>You wanted a trunk, they literally built a trunk and a rack to hold it on the back of the car

Which is the entire reason burgers still refer to it as a "trunk" today.

in the real thing yes? in gramps thing; i dont know, ive only seen it once when i was like.. 8.

i dont see why not though?

That's called hot rod and has existed for almost 50 years.
>>
>>13904123
>for almost fifty years
yeah, nah.
people were tearing down model As and swapping flathead v8s into them in the 30s.
Even the term hotrod came about pre-ww2.
