they did it was called the ford escort. then it went FWD in the UK in the 3rd generation model and was ruined forever.
or the ford (mercury) capri. the brittish version of the mustang the reason being the mustang was too wide for english roads. so they made their own. usa only got the first 2 genrations not the 3rd. the 3rd was a styling update to the mk2 the usa got a rebadged mustang instead.
