That was the whole point you silly senpai. At that point there weren't any MR available for a reasonable price. The idea was to bring MR to masses and the reason it failed didn't have anything to do with power. It was all about practicality or more specifically Toyota misidentifying the wants and needs of a market.
This car pretty much HAD to be a secondary car. It couldn't carry enough of anything to be a DD and it was right in the Miata's crosshairs. Unlike the Miata you could not make this your one and only. So Toyota was relying not only on customers who are in the market for a "fun car" in addition to their DD, but customers who were looking for a fun car and would sacrifice a lot of practicality for a little more fun than a Miata. It didn't capture the market that Toyota hoped it would.
