It's something manufacturers do for ads and press releases. The reason they don't isn't clear, but the I'd guess that it's to make the car look cleaner and more pleasant to the viewer who would be distracted by the plate. Or probably so the photos can be used in various countries instead of specific to one place.
It's fairly common practice. Next time you see a car ad, notice that there probably is no front plate and the rear plate has been painted the same as the body color.

Not really fixed. This might feel faster on boost due to the torque, but the power tto weight is actually worse. They added an extra 100lbs. The good thing is turbo, so easy to add power.

I think both still look off. I prefer the Miata by a bit, but it is far from perfect. Both cars could look good, but the details screw it up. A midcycle refresh will do both cars good.
Im conflicted on the whole car. A turbo is good and the looks are alright, but Im afraid the handling wont be as good as the Miata. It is a whole 5 inches longer, withe the same wheelbase. That puts more weight past the wheels, which is bad for handling. Not a big deal assuming there is not much weight at those ends, but there must be. Where else would the weight go besides the engine maybe? Surely its not an extra 100lbs. Who knows, but I wouldnt say this is better than the Miata yet.
Maybe this is wishful thinking, but what if Fiat helps design a turbo engine for the Miata? They have some good, fuel efficient turbo engines. It would be a fair trade, Fiat gets a chassis and Mazda gets an engine. People want a turbo Miata but Mazda has no engine.

It has the same engine as the Abarth 500 which has a 0-60 of 6.9s versus the ND MX-5s 5.8s so that torque sure doesn't seem to account for much.
Being RWD and gearing may change things a bit, but I'd bet still that the ND Miata is faster around a track, if not to 0-60 as well.
30 more torque doesn't mean much when it's also heavier and it's a turbo so that isn't flat torque.
