How bad of an idea is it to buy an rx8? I have never owned a Dorito motor before but I am positive I can handle apex seals and other big jobs. They are pretty cheap around here.

Nothing else is likely to be fucked in that car.
The rest is reliable. Hell, the Renesis II engine is perfectly reliable too as long as it's been decently maintained its whole life.
But a rebuild is a lot harder than in an FB or FC.
I'd have recommend buying a new gen2 RX8 when people had the chance, but with used you just have no idea what you're getting even if a mechanic tests it out and says everything is okay unless you actually go in there with a telescopic camera.

Then again, as long as you get a 2006+ and have it inspected by Mazda, given how cheap these cars are used it's still pretty damn worth it.
There's not a lot of 2000+ cars that you can get that are as nice and fun for that cost. 2006 RX-8s go for about the same or less than 2006 MX-5s go.
I'd still want to see what the inside of the engine looks like, though.
