What's a good first car?

You should be able to find a Civic SI in decent condition for that price. Fast enough to have a little fun but won't kill you. Plus the ease of Hondur ownership. Along those likes is the Mazda Speed3 or Golf GTI. WRX is also a possibility but with the rice tax, you won't get much for that $15k.
Only problem is FWD with all of those cars besides the Subaru. If you need RWD, maybe 350z/370z or Infiniti G35. Or E46 3series with Manuél.
$15k gives you a lot of choices. Have Toyobarus hit that price yet? Go test drive some stuff. Just don't spend $15k on a car that was $70k new and is a total heap of shit. Get something reliable.

Mr2 and mods
C4 Vettes are dirt cheap nowadays, and although they're from the 80's/early 90's they still hold up rather well. Manual transmissions are harder to come by than automatics, though, especially if you want the older 4+3 Doug Nash. You're more likely to find a 90's model with a 6-speed manual over an 80's one.

Or just put 15grand as the down payment for an ND MX-5. They're a fuckload better than the NC. They're the best MX-5 by far and a great car.
Fully adjustable camber/caster/toe front and rear.
The best rear suspension you can get outside of some supercars or a Porsche.
A lot more comfortable and nicer looking and interior than the previous Miatas.
One of the best cars you can hope to start out on except maybe like an FD or a base Cayman with LSD.
Don't get the break package because you can get a lower and stiffer suspension and better brakes for the same price. Just get the base model, it comes very well equipped standard.
Lacks power, but 0-60 in 5.8s isn't slow, and is faster than the other Miatas. 0-60 in 5s used to be fucking fast 25 years ago.
