I want a civic si for a first car because I've heard they are an easy platform to mod on and they are decently priced for older ones. Thoughts?

Some insurance companies have very high premiums on them because past generations had ridiculous theft rates. Get insurance quotes first.
It's pretty good, and definitely fun to drive, but it's a lot easier to get more power out of a turbocharged car (at the cost of turbo lag, which I personally hate).
I had a '11 Si and it was fun. But the 9th Gen wheels are so off putting.
