Pretty much.
>>
No they all are built with speed control units by the government to make sure no one can go faster than 99mph

Hey thats the speedo on my accord

Not all cars, most modern cars can though. My old civic could barely push 105. There's lots of cars pre 1990s that can't reach 100

No, most GM trucks and Vans made since the '90s have been limited to 98mph.

>>
I once had a 94 ford tempo that could break 100. So that leads me to believe as long as your car isn't nanny'd to death it should be able to make it to 100. Modern cars that is.

Although I bet my fury could break 100 too
>>
Had a mid 80s cavalier station wagon that would do only about 60mph with the pedal to the floor.

Speed limit on the highway was 70. No fucks were given. Comfy as fuck car despite being a shit bucket. That wood trim dash and leather lined steering wheel. I wish I had restored it like I wanted to.

I've gotten this thing (04 C230 Kompressor Mercedes-Benz, cheapest Benz of the 04 year) to 115 before but I got scared of busting the water pump/causing an oil leak/causing an antifreeze leak/etc.

I think I was justified going that fast though. I lost my wallet with $400 at a grocery store in a bad part of town.
>>
>>13878765
No, and its not safe in some larger vehicles, or vehicles with bare minimum brakes.

>>13878849
How the fuck was it ever legal to build cars with higher top speeds than the speedo would indicate?
>>
>>13878861
Because there was probably no reason to include speeds higher than those allowed by law. A lot of these older cars were built during a time when the federal maximum limit anywhere was like 55mph. That's why you see a lot of cars with the 55 circled or squared off. The engine could put out that much power but since the car would never legally need to reach that speed why include it?

That's just my guess.
>>
>>13878861
Lots of vehicles can wrap the speedometer.

>Ford excursions speedometer goes back to 0 once it buries at 120
>not like it wraps around
>it just resets back to zero and holds until it's under 120 then it springs back
>>
>>13878786

>>
>>13878887
Because the car still could. Who guarantees that everyone will go the speed limit at all times?

How about that shit. I was right. Look under speedometer. 55 had to have special emphasis and it couldn't go higher than 85. Deductive reasoning right there.
>>
>>13878861
That's exactly why though, they put 85 as the max for a while to discourage excessive speeding since you don't really know how fast you're going.

Also managed 100mph -- and change -- in an S12 Gazelle. 180km/h, GPS indicated (On a phone! Motorola A925).

Not as many as you think. Even the worst malaise era inline sixes could push big american RWD sedans into the triple digits given enough open freeway.

Trucks & vans of the 60's were real dogs, though, as well as low HP imports like the VW beetles, citroens, and early hondas. The first couple years of the Pinto with the 1.6l Kent engine, too.

Literally no one else cares, and I care even less because non-metric units can go fuck right off and die. I hate living in a country that shares its units with fucking Burma. Having to carry around twice as many wrenches and sockets because americans can't understand base 10 fucking sucks. It's not even like standard measurements are easier, who wants to do the math with fucking fractions? If I need a different size tool, I should only have to go up or down one millimeter, not memorize a whole table of what size fits what.

>>13878906
The purpose of the 85 MPH speedometer rule was to aid in speed-limit compliance.

It made it easier to get a more precise speedometer reading in the ranges where it actually mattered, that is to say, around the speed limits. At the time, the highest common speed limits on US freeways were 65, so they indicated 20 over that, and if you were going more than 20 over the limit you really don't need to know anything more than that. If you have no intention of obeying the speed limit, why do you care what the speedometer says anyway?

25-65 was given half the sweep range on an 85mph speedometer. That meant for the first time that it was easy to track even 1 or 2 MPH speed variances - a lot of 140 mph speedometers before had so little needle movement at legal speeds that it was hard to pin down speed closer than 5mph. Modern designs are better, but back in the old days you could be looking at some fat needles on small diameter gauges with tiny markings.

Also some manufacturers were lazier than others complying with the rule.

I can have my average mpg read 99 if I reset it while the car is in motion. Or if I reset it while I'm driving on the highway it looks like pic related.

Corvettes are actually capable of 30s on the highway because they are aerodynamic, relatively light, and aren't doing anything at highway speeds, just cruising along at 1100-1400 RPM

Have had my dad's auto C4 average 28-30 on the highway before.

>>13878765
no, only jet airplanes can achieve such extreme speeds
don't listen to all the other trolls ITT

that's pretty quick for a red shed thing
>>
>>13885733
The new ones also have a ridiculously tall top gear so you can bumble along at 80mph while the engine is barely turning over.

My '91 chevy g-20 was governed at like 90, but the speedo stopped at 80. it wanted to go so much faster, you could tell.
>inb4 not a car
well i had a '84 chevy citation II; speedo stopped at 75, don't think i ever got it above 70. It didn't want to go faster.

What does this have to do with what I said? The guy who took the pic obviously reset the avg mpg reading while on the highway. To "average" 30mpg he'd have to be getting around 40mpg+ highway since they get around 17-20 city depending how easy you are on it and how many lights you hit.

I never claimed the Corvette cant hit 30mpg while putting down the highway, just that pic doesn't represent a true average mpg. Like my pic said I was getting 49mpg highway, but I only actually get 38mpg average.

>tfw got into the same argument with the guy about his flashed Impala with ECO-TUNEā„¢ and he's stopped posting about his mpg since he said he would make a fuelly to check his actual mileage instead of using the computer

My ranger's speedo only goes to 85.
The fastest I've gotten it is up to just past that so about 86 mph. It is an inline-four five-speed with about 110 hp so not really surprising.

I doubt I could get it to 100 without an extremely long and extremely straight downhill road.
>>
>people bitching about others speeding in an open road or high way with little to no people for less than 30 seconds
Just because you own a prius, that doesn't mean we all own a prius-equivalent car. I ride from 70 to 120mph in less than 10 seconds just to compensate on why I bought a sports car in the first place. Why buy a fast car, if you plan to go slow?

As for OP, no. "Any" car could be a car that is very old, but still runs, that is going up a very steep hill.

can confirm.

Same car.

My shitbox develops a death rattle at about 90.

90s speed limit 55 syndrome here. My car csn push way past 85 easily but the computer limits it to 115

As an owner of a 96 4 cylinder ranger with a 120 mph speedo I can confirm that long downhill+tail wind is required to hit 100

ok no FUCK YOU last week I got into an argument with some 80 year old cunt who said EXACTLY THAT

a 1g ford ka can't do 100mph

1g kia cee'd with 1.4 liter engine can do 120mph with all of it's windows rolled down stably

My 4cyl 1995 wrangler tops out at around 85, maybe 90 on a downward slope. Feels dangerous as hell, like a slight nudge of the steering either side will make the thing roll right off the road.
