Alright /o/. I bought this '86 RX7 for a measly $1000, and I've been DDing it for the past 5 years. Ask me anything.
>>
how often do you have to replace some parts? I'm not saying planned maintenance, but "Ohh fuck, whats that noise?" sudden shit.
>>
NA or turbo?
Mpg?
Relability issues?

Always thought this was really the good one. Prettiest rx7 IMO.
>>
>>13878460
About five months after buying it, there was a slight vibration that started to pop up at 80km/h and up. This got worse and worse over time, and after finally inspecting it, I found out that the u-joint on the driveshaft was half sheared, somehow. So that was a good "jesus christ I was actually driving this" moment. Apart from that, I've had to replace a battery, an alternator, and the light switch on the dash.

>>13878461
NA
I get around 250/300km from a full tank depending on my lead foot, 14 gallon tank. You do the math.
Only reliability issues were when the alternator went, and the occasional time when it floods, but that solves itself just by cranking it with the accelerator pressed down.
>>
>>13878454
Shame that none of these are for sale around my area this time of year. I'll have all summer off this year so hopefully some will pop up and I can use the summer to fix it up.
>>
>>13878469
>250km
>14 gallons
Jesus that's fucking awful
>>
>>13878469
11mpg?
>>
>>13878512
Not really considering the year i mean my 528 e39 autotragic gets like 16.8 mpg and this guy said he gets around 19
>>
>>13878520
If his numbers match up, that's 11-13 mpg. Even by rotary standards that sounds like horseshit. Should be getting 15 mpg city with a lead foot.

if the pictured rx7 is yours, you bought the lightest FC model that was made. what you can do, is to replace those 4 lugs with 5 lugs as well as getting the independent suspension from the GTU made in 88, and boy, you got a fun little car. must be slow af desu, but at least you're slow in style
>pictured: my old FB and FC
>>
>>13878613
It is. The one I bought and have been driving is the GX. A year or so ago, I bought an 89 GXL frame that had the tail lights, motor and tranny gutted, and was planning on swapping everything over. (the 86 GX frame has more rust than metal at this point) Then found out that the engine mountings were different between the S4 and S5 models, on top of having no time to really work on it, so the shell has just been sitting in my driveway ever since.
>>
>>13878631
yeah, so it's pointless then. what you should do then is just scrap it altogether and save up to buy a decent S5 shell, then go ahead in rebuilding your own engine, ordering your parts from atkins or whatever floats your boat. it's easier than people think, and then you can tune your engine using a good stand alone, before dyno tuning it for optimum performance. shouldn't be more than 4k-5k desu senpai
>>
Miles/miles since you bought it?
>>
>>13878528
Km/g.. That's essentially 12 mpg. So you want a landyacht with a 454 or a doritomobile

you don't buy these cars for the fucking mpg lol, you buy them because they're cheap and they're fun to drive
>fun =/= fast
>>
>>13878639
For around that dosh, I think I'd rather buy a good S5 vert. I've driven a couple and the handling difference is almost unnoticable from the coupe, plus summer 'vert privilege. The S5 shell I have is in good nick, but the fact that the mountings are different means it requires some custom fabrication to get the S4 engine to sit properly. I'm decent with a mig gun, but not enough to trust myself with major welds like that.

>>13878642
Bought at 180k, currently at 225k. KM, since I live in Canuckistan.

>>13878651
Gods, the FB. I actually wanted to get one of those, until I got behind the wheel of one. The steering is so fucking numb in those things, I felt no confidence whatsoever taking one of those on a twisty backroad.
>>
>>13878651
this. Fucking rx-8's in my area are cheaper than miatas, but they'll eat you alive in fuel costs.
>>
>tfw your nissan is more unreliable than a $1000 dorito

never ever buy a 300zx

>>
>>13878689
Actually, since you owned both, how did you feel about the handling on the FB vs the FC?

>tfw asking other people shit on my own AMA
>>
>>13878692
there was play on the FB, sure, but nothing serious honestly, it was very fun on the corners, and at that point, the play wasn't anything that prevented tight cornering, but the FC handled a bit better, that much is true, because it had overall better suspension
>>
>>13878587
>I wasn't buying an econobox.

But exonoboxes have more horsepower and torque than those rotary engines
>>
>>13878679
Did you buy a z32?
>>
>>13878631
>Then found out that the engine mountings were different between the S4 and S5 models
They are the same.
>>13878613
All FCs had independent suspension
>>
>>13878712
Which econoboxes?
>>
>>13878671
Not just fuel costs. Renesis doritos are fucking horseshit. How did they manage to fuck up the 13B so badly from the last gen RX7?
>Less reliable
>Less time before a rebuild is needed
>Less power
>Far less torque
>still shitty emissions and MPG

Literally improved nothing. Avoid RX8s like the fucking plague, unless you want to swap in an older 13B. In which case, the RX8 is most definitely a much better car to sit in every day. Interior trim on the RX8 is superb for a sports car.
>>
>>13878520
>>13878528
>>13878550
US and UK MPGs are different.
>>
>>13878508
If the engine isn't running strong from the get-go, abandon ship. Rebuilding a rotary is easy, but the parts aren't cheap. If it's ever overheated, you may as well toss out the whole thing.

>>
>>13878454
do you premix?
if you do, how do you go about doing that? do you just pour it directly into the gas tank?
>>
>>13879930
No, there's too much body rust for me to even consider it as a potential project anymore. Plus, it's still my DD. If I do anything interesting, it'll be starting with a more solid base.

>>13879997
No premix, it just uses the stock oil metering pump, running on 10W40 Royal Purple synthetic ever since I got it. Previous owner said it's been on synthetic it's entire life, which struck me as odd as rotarybros swear by dino juice for any different number of reasons, but the motor is still strong after 230k so clearly we've done something right.

Off to work now, if this thread hasn't died when I get back I'll answer more shit.

Did america ever get RX2's?

since you guys can drive around with straight pipes you could have the worst sounding most obnoxious rotary ever.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCIXi0UTIB0

im guessing that america didnt since its so hard to find videos of them. search RX2 and all i get are corvettes and RX8's for some reason.
>>
>>13880127
I've seen a couple or so of those in my area, but they were a lot quieter. I believe they did get sold in NA since you can find them in LHD.

That doesn't sound like a straight piped stock 12a though. That erratic idle sounds very much like a bridge ported N/A 13b pulled from an FC. Considering the long drag he pulled off when he dropped the clutch, that's probably what it was. No way a 40 year old 1.2L dorito would leave elevens that long.
>>
>>13879683
You are literally a stupid cunt for buying a z32.

Most unreliable POS ever.

Z31's though.... unless you're retarded you wont kill it. Literally the fact they went from VG30E to VG30DE is what fucked it
>>
>>13880160
i was trying to find one though, dont seem to be any good videos.

Seen a few irl and theyre always comically loud and thats in a country that actually has noise limits.

>LHD
you know most of europe is also LHD right?
im just skeptical they were sold in the US because its not a v8.
>>
>>13880213
The 240Z wasn't a murrican pig iron pushrod v8 either, and it sold like hotcakes. Not saying the RX2/RX3 was anywhere near that popular, but this was back in the day when murricans were actually somewhat intelligent and could buy things other than v8 landbarges or econoboxes.
>>
>>13878666
> Gods, the FB. I actually wanted to get one of those, until I got behind the wheel of one. The steering is so fucking numb in those things, I felt no confidence whatsoever taking one of those on a twisty backroad.

Maybe that's because it's pretty darn old? People say stuff like how AW11s are so uncontrollable until they replace the 30 year old worn out suspension bushings.
>>
>>13879499
>Less power
>Far less torque

because no turbos..
they compare very favorably in power/torque compared to every n/a dorito previously

>Less time before a rebuild is needed
this is a meme
rebuilds happen because you fucked something up or neglected something.
premix, don't let it overheat, and rev it a lot
now, there are issues with the RX-8 that can cause engine problems if ignored, but they are independent from the engine itself.
>>
>>13880127
That's definitely not stock, and all heavily ported rotaries sound like that.
