Go ahead if you're ready to put $10k in maintenance.

Yes.

It's not that much.
>>
>>13872788
Fine, $9k
>>
>>13872788
It's not that bad. The engines and drivetrains aren't bad and shouldn't have too many big problems (assuming you get the I6).

If you do an E36 or E46, there are so many parts available that you rarely have to pay for expensive now OE shit from Germany. It's when you buy a 7-Series with 180k miles on it that you are going to be fucked by repair costs.

Make sure you buy a Hayne's/Bentley manual and get ready to learn how to wrench. It's a German car, so maintenance needs to be regular and proper, and you'll have a car that lasts you a long time. If not it'll fuck you right up the ass. I don't have any experience with newer BMW's, but older ones like the E21, E28, and E30 are built like tanks and will go forever if you take car of them.
>>
>>13874173
mr2 yeah, rx7 is ricer taxed
and an e30 will probably decimate an sa/fc rx7

So what are you actually looking at? For $5k, you should be able to grab a real clean E36 325i or 328i. Or for the same money, you could grab a decent E46 325i but it will be an earlier one with high miles.

Are you in the US? Only problem with the BMWs is there is quite a bit of a tax if you want a manual transmission.

A $4000 E36 with an automatic trans would be worth closer to $5500 with a 5spd.

Anyone got any advice on the E39 models?

Have around $5,000 to throw around and an I6 E39 seems to fit the bill perfectly on a nice and comfy RWD black sedan.
>>
>>13874348
Save $2k more and have yourself a clean 540i msport.
>>
>>13874414
I don't need the V-8 version.

The I6 will have better repair costs, come with a better insurance rate, and be cheaper to buy.
>>
is a 1995 BMW 318is dependable at all?
>>
>>13872719
E46 3 series. 5k, under 100K miles for mine
>>
>>13874445
yes the m42 and m44 are dependable

the e36 manuals are extremely reliable cars other than the water pump impeller issue on the m50/m52 which is easy to remedy.

I can tell you're a gambling man OP.... There's a reason every used car lot I went to was full of BMW/Mercedes for <$5k....

I had a fully loaded E46 330i with around 165k miles on it and absolutely loved it, but I must have put close to $4k into in in the first couple months to replace the control arms, fix engine oil leaks, replace tires and shit, drive belt snapped, and a lot more, I can't remember anymore.

If you get one, make sure to bring it to a shop FIRST to check for oil leaks and stuff that could need replacing. Someone totaled my car, I managed to argue with insurance long enough for them to give me a little over $7k for it, and I'll stay away from BMW until I can afford a new one, in which case I still wouldn't buy one.

The repair cost difference between the V8 and i6 is real, a few BMW techs have told me from firsthand experience. Gas mileage with the i6 is better too. I recently picked up a 530i for around 6k with 100k miles in good condition. It's really comfy as hell, the difference in interior luxury between it and the E46 is huge. Legroom is really good too. I honestly love it. Depends on where you live, but 5k in my area would get you a car with higher miles and in worse shape. If you can find a good one, then go for it: you can't do much better for the price.
>>
>>13874613
Much more so than previous years, yes. The e39/e46 years weren't neccesarily "unreliable", though they need regular preventative maintenance.
>>
I bought my E36 M3 for $5k about 3 years ago.

No regrets.
>>
>>13874206
You can get a good N/A FC for 3k or less, and they're bulletproof as long as you do basic dorito maintenance.
>>
>>13872719
My old man recently got an E46 with a 2.5L I6 for $2k, then proceeded to spend another $2k on getting it to pass inspection. It's surprisingly good shit for a $4k car. Nearly 200hp, leather and wood power-everything interior, auto-leveling suspension, 50/50 weight distribution with manual gearbox on a 4 door sedan. I personally own an '86 dorito as my DD, and even I'm a bit impressed by how smooth everything in the beamer is. The fly-by-wire throttle/clutch and electronic driver aids will piss you off if you're a purist, though.

What is it actually like to own an E38? I will be able to secure a 1999-2001 model with <120000km

e30 weighs less and makes roughly the same hp as an fc. and i honestly question the fcs ability to turn.

and it has a super cheap aftermarket.

m20 = bulletproof

basically e30 325i > fc rx7 all days of the week all weeks of the year
>>
>>13878103
but the fc is cooler than an e30, i will absolutely concede that.
but def not cheaper to own or mod in the us
>>
>>13878103
>i honestly question the fcs ability to turn.

You must be new to cars in general.
>>
>>13878103
>weighs less and makes roughly the same HP
Weight I'll give you, but the FC turbo has an extra 30-50 HP based on what spec of either car you're comparing it to.

I can't really compare aftermarket since I have no experience with older BMW aftermarkets, but the FC isn't particularly expensive.

The 13B, on or off the boost, is also pretty damn reliable no matter how hard you're driving it. Every old 13B should last you at least 200k as long as you're not retarded and take care of your dorito.

Also, having driven both, my stock FC is WAY sharper in the bends than my mate's stock E30 sedan. The SA had shitty old numb steering, but the FC is probably the best handling car you can get for relatively little money.
