Is a Holden 355 stroker v8 worth the money or is there a better 5 litre engine that can be had for cheaper?
Can pay anywhere up to $10,000 for something like pic related and that is without a gearbox.
>>
What's it going into ?
>>
>>13872621
a VL commodore, could get an rb26 with twin turbos on it for around $6,000 and i already have a gearbox that will fit but i just want a naturally aspirated engine with a big fuck off cam more than i want vrrrrttttttssssss to be honest.
So i figure a 350 is my best bet, choosing which though is becoming a pain in the arse, they all seem to be fucking expensive for what they are.
>>
LSX.
>>
>>13872602
Get an LS, fuck the other generations of Chevrolet small block V8s.
>>
>>13872647
I do like the LS engines, they go well but the sound of those Holden engines gets me hard

You can give static compression to an LS1 and then put a poorly idling camshaft in it, too.

>Holden ute

One of these days I'll import one.
>>
>>13872602
It's never "worth the money" but fuck it anyway. 308 is one of the best sounding V8s ever.

I GAWTS ME A TREE FIDY FIVE SMAWL BLAWK STROKER MOTOR IN MUH MURRICAN SHITBOX. MAKES BOUT 200HP AT 2000 RPMS BUT MAKES 490FT/LBS CAUSE TORQUE IS ALL DAT DONE MATTER

Makes me fucking sick.
>>
>>13872709
>Makes me fucking sick.
why? cus you need to rev over 9000 for that kinda power
>>
>>13872602
>355 ci
>5.0L
pick one.
>>
>>13872709
>>13872709
This isn't the malaise era, an engine built by an enthusiast won't be choked to hell and will actually make decent power.
>>
>>13872602
355 wouldn't be bad. What are your goals power wise? And is this a purely street car or a race machine too?
>>
>>13872713
> needing to rev
> wanting to rev
I'm sorry your educational program consists of how to fuck your cousin.
Maybe take a look into how F1 cars make their power instead of regurgitating retarded boomer logic based on 50+ year old technology and methods?
>>
>>13872871
>>13872713
Before this devolves into complete shitposting I'd like to remind everyone that each way is different, but not necessarily better or worse. Low end grunt allows for taller gearing to achieve higher speed, high revs allow for the car to be geared lower to achieve greater acceleration.
>>
>>13872869
Street car/skid rig and id like at least 300 kilowatts, so something that can rev hard and is also reliable.
>>
>>13872602
get a used engine and rebuild.

At the wheels or the crank?

You do know all of the technical mumbo jumbo is actually important information and not just a common name for things, right? 355 refers to the cubic inches of displacement, or roughly 5.81L. Stroker refers to a crank that increases the stroke length for more displacement out of the same size bore. "Small Block" refers to engines that are around 5-6L, because they are, well, relatively small compared to Big Blocks, such as Dodge 440s.
>>
>>13872884
crank, i dont plan on putting fats on the rear, more would just make it useless.
>>
>>13872709
You do know what those 355 engines are capable of right?
>>
Get a ls. The truck motors are dirt cheap comparatively. 02+ escalade 06+ vortecmax6.0 is 257kw stock and is 366ci, cam and bolt one should net you 300kw
>>
>>13872688
Yeah i am starting to lean toward the 5 litre more and more, less work and way cheaper even if i get the 308 pumping out the same power as the 355.
>>
>>13872914
Man you can get there with a 350 pretty much by default. Bigger cam and some injectors with an FPR and you are at 300kw all day. Hell, my buddies LT1 with LS heads, shorty headers, mild cam, and dual intakes is putting ~400 to the wheels on a dynapro dyno. If I recall, he has maybe 1800 in the engine overall. Meanwhile, I'm 7k into a build but the engine can handle 1200hp through the bottom end. Estimates put it around 670hp with the cam I selected relative to the flow numbers my top end can push but I will be adding a 2 stage 300/500 Nitrous kit with a throttle plate.
>>
>>13872933
Yeah that is why i was thinking a 350, wanting the engine to stay naturally aspirated and that might be a challenge with the 308 (depending on the 308 that is)
>>
>>13872950
Just go for an LS. You will be at 350 HP pretty well out of the box.
>>
>>13872955
cant put an LS in a VL without getting it engineered, thats a $10,000 job in itself.
>>
>>13872688
So why did you post a 304?
>>
>>13872909
Block literally refers to size of the block. Small blocks are small, big blocks are big
>>
>>13872602
>live in straya
>every japanese foreign used car you can think of
>decides to fuck with cheap american pushrod shit
ISHYGDDT
>>
>>13873171
Not always, pontiac, old's and Buick use the same blocks for their 350s as they do for the 455s
>>
>>13872973
Shit. Then a stroked 308 with a decent cam and you are there with some head work. What's the stock output on one. I'm American.
>>
>>13873171
>>13873203
>Bore spacing
>>
>>13873203
U wot m8. Citation please? Because if that's the case you would not be able to overbore a 455 .060 over or conversely, every 350 owner would run theirs punched to 455 specs.
>>
>>13873207
Similar to a 305 of equivalent years.
>>
>>13873220
So, terrible.
>>
>>13873193
>hurr durr pushrods are bad because I say they are
>>
>>13873220
Man that's pretty bad then. Go long tube headers, aluminum heads, new intake (btw injection or carbd?), new stroker rotating assembly, new fuel pump and FPR. Bigger cam.
>>
>>13873235
>because I say so
>says so because it's true
they're bad because they're heavy and incompetent and require insane spring seat pressures to control them at "high' rpm (like a whole whopping 6000) which makes valvetrain wear out really fast and wipes cam lobes and requires AW additive crutches like ZDDP just to stay alive and the excess mass makes retainers snap and valves drop and with only 2 valves per cyl for a grand total of 16 valves across 8 cylinders you cannot afford to have them fuck up like that, especially with your expensive billet rockers from Jegs
>>
>>13873263
You do understand the advantages though, don't you? It makes for a smaller head, which means you can fit more displacement in the same space as an OHC engine. Instead of high rpm, you just use raw displacement to make power. Nothing wrong with a good pushrod v8.
>>
>>13873276
>You do understand the advantages though, don't you?
Sure, I'll accept all this and more >>13873238 as long as I can shave a few inches off the heads and benefit GM not having to spend money on DOHC............
>>
>>13873276
But hey man, who am I to talk? Big displacement is kind of novel in straya so I guess you're justified in your quest for cubes
>>
>>13873284
Whys you need to shave more than a few thousandths off Alum heads is beyond me. As long as the heads are for the engine, only light decking would be required to ensure a good mating surface. Also, port match them to the headers and intake at the same time for best results.
>>
I've got an Edelbrock 5.7 liter for only 4k but I couldn't tell you shit about installing one.
>>
>>13872639
>VL
>V8
Sell it
Buy an HZ or WB, hell you could probably get a V8 90s Fairlane or Statesman for dirt cheap over there
>>
>>13873466
He's referring to the height.
>>
>>13873284
That's largely due to things being choked from the factory and not a fault of the valvetrain.
>>
>>13873263
They make a thing called roller lifters. People use them. They're burdy gud

Doesn't need crazy springs or will it break valvetrain parts at/for 6k.

>Needs crazy spring pressures and eats itself
>Production v8s are timebombs full of race parts
>>
I love how people love to talk shot about the redlines of Chevy v8's. My Ford 302 redlines at 5200 and sounds like the world is ending anywhere over 3.5k.
>>
>>13873263
I've been building both stock overhaul and performance engines for years and have never heard such bullshit when talking about valvetrain. What springs do you run that require such high spring rates? Hell the double beehives I run on my 543 are nowhere near that spec and can rev to 7k easily (never do as my torque band drops off at 5400 and Hp only increases slowly after 6100, usually shift at 6300).

If that were the case, every pushrod engine would grenade within 10000 miles you dolt. That is not anywhere near the case unless you are talking a race built engine (full mech roller, remote oil filtration, DCOE or some crazy custom DI setup, 4000 stall with a 8500RPM redline and a peaky cam grind).
>>
>>13873193
>decides to fuck with cheap american pushrod shit
australian muscle mate
>>
>>13872602
not any more. for 3+ grand you can buy a vr/vt onwards commodore SS with ls1 all the swap parts are now availible from castlemaine rod shop. and comes with gearbox and diff you will also need to enlarge trans tunnel if its going into a VL because all the v8 ones were custom made by HDT
and the aftermarket is a lot bigger for the LS1 than the 308.
>>
>>13872709
thats how you bait my nigga
