For a sports car to be a sports car absolutely. Rwd is required for high speed and precise handling. However in an economy car it's not important and maybe even disadvantageous. similar to automatic versus manual

For a fact the 3000gt and eclipse both come up as sport car/grand tourer. I know because I've looked into both before buying my crx (which does not come up as sport car just sport compact). That's decided by the industry fools.

In my opinion, a sports car is a light vehicle with good power and a manual transmission.
An heavy car with a lot of power would be a GT.
Things like Integras and Celicas are sports cars in my book and Challengers are not, I dont care what anyone says. (ITR and GTS with manual gearbox in this case obviously)

Blame treehuggers and casuals for that. RWD is the superior platform for performance, but performance isn't what the vast majority of customers want. They want space and fuel economy, which FWD is better at. It takes(a small amount of) power to move the long driveshaft of an RWD car, which means more gas being used, plus the drivetrain takes up space in the mid-rear that could be used for a middle passenger seat or more boot space.
tl;dr: FWD cars only on the rise because of casuals, driveshafts are to blame
