I need help. I changed the front brakes of a 2012 honda civic, but when I got to the back I got confused. Do i need to remove the cover and will the caliper, c-clamps, and pads be underneath there? Thanks

That's a drum brake.

They have shoes, not pads. And cylinders, not callipers.

Wait a minute, Civics that new have drums on the rear?

The thing you are looking at is the drum, which is basically like the rotor except that it covers all. Inside you have brake-shoes with the same function as the brakepads, but they are bent and usually are much thinner and longer

Remove the drum and you'll see the shoes inside. A good tip is loosening the wire so that the shoes aren't in contact with the drum, making it harder to get it off

O lawdy....

Do one side at a time. That way you can refer back to the other side to make sure you are putting it back together right.

Well I didnt know the rears would have this, what I've seen was it was just smaller than the fronts. Thats why I came here to ask. As soon as I saw the drum I put the tire on and ledt it alone. Now that I know what it is of course Im gonna read up on ahit and watch videos. So yaaa.

Also why was I sold brake pads at autozone?
>>
>>13869701

I'm guessing your car is a low-options package, which would explain the drumbrakes as they are cheaper to manufacture, and that the pads they sold you are for a higher-options package that has rotors both front and back
>>
>>13869701

Model was likely available with both and you didn't specify.

Drum brakes are kinda rare now. I haven't ever owned a car with them, except my granddad's old truck.

Thanks anons

They're definitely still around, I would say less common rather than rare. Also now there's such a thing as rotors with drums built inside of them.
