NEIN FOUR FOUR
Anyone on /o/ who owns one? How is it like? Is the moneypit rep fair?
For any knowledgable enough to answer, why would I choose this car over a MR2 or RX-7?
>>13867995
>over a MR2
Better looks, better performance, better everything.
>or RX-7
For no particular reason, really.
>>13868020
> better performance
only if you get a turbo model though
>>13868086
Yes, the turbo one for the matter. More than worth the dough IMHO.
>>13868102
even then though, i'm not really sure. The SW20 is pretty beastly.
How much does a turbo in good condition go for? And how expensive is the maintenance if I did it all myself?
>>13868086
Or an S2.
I've got a 1990 S2 and it's pretty torquey. It makes a relaxed tourer but you can still push on quite nicely on back roads. It's also surprisingly reasonable on fuel on a long run.
>Is the moneypit rep fair?
Don't ever buy a cheap one because it'll have missed services and so on and it will bite you in the arse. It's not a bad DIY car, I changed the timing belt, balance belt, timing chain and associated tensioners and idlers last summer and it took me about 8 hours start to finish.
It looks fucking glorious, too
>>13867977
They're only a money pit if
1) You buy a shitty one
2) You don't know what you're doing
They're an absolute hoot to drive. Fucking loved my friend's when he had one.
>>13867977
I have a 944S 16v.
It's a fun car that handles great. Having some issues with the alternator/battery right now though. It left me stranded last week during traffic.
944 is a meme car and is a testament to how many underaged browse 4chan these days.
>>13867977
Money pit, a bitch to work on, not cheap.
>>13867995
I would take any gen MR2 or RX7 over a 944.
Saving up my paychecks, planning on buying a 944 next summer, and saving up after that in order to drop an LS into it. That is of course implying I don't buy one with crippling engine issues that force me to spend the LS fund on repairs. Still, LS 944, sounds like the undiscovered god machine to me.
>>13868377
>bitch to work on.
I guess in the sense that it's got tight spaces but it isn't any more complex than any other 80's car.
There's one guy on here who has a really clean one but he had to spend 5k on a full rebuild but he says since then it's been reliable
Just bought a 1984 944 yesterday. It was sitting so it's gonna need some maintenance but it's in pretty good condition. Gonna store it for the winter and work on it next spring
>>13867977
Buy one that's been well maintained, assume water pump and timing belt need replacing, electronic functions are key, ect.
Everything you should do when you buy any old car
>>13868630
There's one for 7kish on STL craigslist and the guy would be willing to negotiate bc he needs money bad
>>13867977
>NEIN
It's neun, you fuckwit
>>13869179
Well, lets not get ahead of ourselves. My cargo cover broke while I was doing some Christmas shopping today which is another thing all the people who hate this car can use to point to what a money pit this car is.
>>13870023
Never had a car with a cargo cover so not to familiar with their function. How much would that cost to repair?
>>13870152
It's just a privacy screen for stuff in the trunk. It's kind of one big piece so I am probably just going to head down to the wrecking yard and see if I can fine one I can pull out of another car.
>>13870273
Weird. Well on the plus side, there's a litany of 944's being parted out across Craigslist.
>>13870273
Does it actually hide anything at all? I will probably be carrying a shitload of expensive filming equipment in it, for the matter.
>>13868211
Yeah, Nah
>Cheap (because of reliability issues)
>Perfect weight distribution
>Sharp looks
>>13870310
It actually does a pretty good of covering the entire trunk.
A BRZ is faster than a 944
>I know, friend has a 944 and we raced
>>13870609
944 turbo will still spank a brz all day
Boxster owner here, for a project car I'd rather get an FC RX7
>>13870626
Oh I know, I've seen some monster turbo'd 944's and I respect them. Turbo or nah, they are still really fun cars.
They're fine OP, just wrench and do maintenance. I DDed mine ( I just killed it this week, shit is SO cash),
but honestly I wouldn't DD them, there is nothing other than something dead-simple like a CRX worth DDing over the age of 25, so if it's your first and only car like it was mine I wouldn't in a million years.
As I said, mine has come up with a major headache over the last few weeks (I abused it, it's not the cars fault) so i'll just be LS swapping it hopefully next summer because I can't afford to store a dead car.
>>13870721
What about DDing it with an alternative car on standby?
>>13871403
That's what I do. I have put close to 40k on my car in the past couple of years but I have a secondary car around just in case
Or when I need a cupholder.
>>13871410
>no cupholder
But anon, isn't the 944 a spacey luxurious coupé? How can it be it doesn't have a cupholder?
>>13871422
>But anon, isn't the 944 a spacey luxurious coupé?
Who the hell gave you that idea?
>>13871403
What's the point, the oldest 944's are 32yrs old and honestly driving them they way they're supposed to be driven is asking for something to break -- if that happens you still have to fix it unless you enjoy having a dead car sitting around.
Mine is going on fun/weekend/track status once the swap is complete
>>13871422
No cupholders but an ashtray.
>>13872522
Well since I daily my 944 maybe I can answer the first part. Growing up in the 80s/90s the 944 was my literal dream car. Yes, I know it's sad but that's what happens when you drop up in a tiny rural town. So for me driving the car is that little mental checkbox of "you made it. you aren't living in a shack in bumfuck nowhere Oregon." yes it's vain and materialistic, I know.
The other thing is with all the work I put into rebuilding my car I am super proud of it.
>>13872522
>What's the point
Good steering, lots of trunk space, not as big as it seems and therefore not impossible to park. Really, there are quite a few good reasons to use it as a DD.
