What does /o/ think about black-box insurance schemes and telematics in general?
>>
>>13867127
It's annoying and I'm personally against it, but I thought they can only raise your insurance cost by like a certain percentage no matter how aggressive you drive.
>>
>>13867127
As long as the driver has the choice, I don't care.
>>
>>13867135
Well, most cars nowadaysdays have telematics recorders as part of their ICE systems.

Soon every car will have them and there's nothing you can do about it if you want a new car, save from ripping out the ICE equipment.

>>
>Get cut off by retarded women in crossovers all day
>Have to slam my brakes constantly
>Insurance thinks I'm an unsafe driver and jacks my rates up

>Have to accelerate quickly to merge onto a highway

It's great for corporate fleets, trucking or people transport. But I think there's an untapped market full of super economical hybrid drivers who want to track everything they do and optimize their driving.

There's also the use case of weekend racers/hoonigans. Pair it with software Rahat let's you create your own courses mapped onto public roads/test G force values of your tires and torque.

I have 3 telematics devices in my car and they can be pretty great.

Oh, those boxes would raise my rates.

The two people I know who used them got no insurance reduction.

The boxes can fuck off unless they pay me UP FRONT.
>>
>>13867610
This, some kid at my work had one of these and got higher rates for his cornering and shit like that, he was in a 1.1L Hyundai shitbox and barely pushed it at all.

If I was forced to have one I'd also install a signal jammer in the car.

Kinda unfair. Tried the progressive one. Had it about 3 months. People cutting you off, hard brake, beeps. One of the factors is when you drive. Have to drive at night cause second shift. They think it's more dangerous at night. 1/100 th the traffic when I drove. Once it bleeped at me when I pulled into a convenience store parking lot. For no rasin. Insurance finally went up and this is no joke, to 1000 $ a Month. Ihink they wanted me to quit them. Got met life and pay 37 a week for three cars.

Need for Speed ProStreet becomes a thing?
>>
>>13867993

It depends on the firmware on the box and the upfront software. Speeding can be fixed with regular map updates and GPS can be made more accurate with hdop filtering/almanac downloads. Some boxes are total shit, but a good box is great. Being able to track your driving down to the second with g force readings, vbus speed, and fuel readings is fucking awesome.

well you have to accelerate to go fast and going fast is dangerous. So by connection accelerating is very dangerous.
As is steering, you might steer into something by accident, therefore steering should be avoided.

They never charged me for anything but one of the incentives to using the black box was that at the end of the policy they would reward you for good driving.
My driving just happened to land me the category that didn't charge me but didn't reward me.

To be honest i think the black box was pretty shit at its job, after the first few weeks of having it i got sick of it and just started driving however i wanted and it never seemed to correlate with my monthly reports too much.
One month i would drive like a mad cunt everyday and it would be all green and another month i wouldn't drive much and mostly in traffic and i would have random reds and shit.
>>
>>13869084

I kid I knew in college did basically this.

Used the snapshot thing to drive from the offcampus dorm everyday to campus and back for the entire semester, got the huge discount, and hasn't used it since I guess.
>>
>>13868996

These are server-side updates. All the device does is send GPS data. Accuracy of the GPS can be changed via an OTA update that the customer isn't even aware of. And map updates are done on the server side, ie where the GPS plotting is done for the UI.
>>
I drive a fucking mustang GT, I'd be fucked.

I saved around 100 every six month in my policy with progressive, but it's very sensitive but it only took 2 weeks to get used to it once I was used to breaking it was fine. Progressive doesn't increase your rate it can only reduce it. I only had to do it for 6 months but I'm happy it's over with.

>tfw no electronics aside from ignition, fuel gauge, tach, wipers, and lights

Can't track my car's telemetry when it doesn't have any. It could sort of be done with a standalone accelerometer thing unfortunately.
>>
>>13873865
Good job. That doesn't invalidate his point that 99% of people wouldn't be bothered to try.
>>
>>13873500
I suppose if you are a teenager, that makes sense. If you are over 18, no it's an awful idea.

I worked closing shift for pizza delievery, I'd be out on the road until 0230 on the weekends. That black box would have flagged me so many times.

I despise the insurance black box idea because the data it collects is justification to price gouge customers.

>Going 70 mph
>premium is raised because I was 'driving too fast'
>70 mph is the posted speed

Or consider the following...

>hard turn and put the cars nose in the ground to avoid an accident
>premium raised for 'driving aggressively'

These systems have no awareness of what's going on on the road around them. So they make erroneous assumptions and bill you on those assumptions.
>>
Almost certainly an NSA designed scheme to track as many cars as humanly possible.
>>
When I lived in Canada I had one on my Cavalier because I wanted to lower my rated by any means possible (was paying $200/month holla). They couldn't ever raise my rates because of my driving, only lower them. I also got an automatic 5% discount for using it. I had it for 4 months, it never (read: never told me that it) tracked my speed, only acceleration, braking, and driving between 12 and 5am. I eventually got sick of it telling me I was a bad driver because I had to brake for wild animals (Lived in the middle of nowhere) and stopped using it. As soon as I pulled the damn thing out, my OBD reader and 9v plug stopped working. Fucking belairdirect killed my car's plugs. But at least my discount went up to 7%.
>>
All our work trucks have bullshit like this

makes it a huge pain in the ass

speed limit is 110km/h on the major highways here, companies safety department will get tons of email notifications at 120km/h, after 30 seconds of doing said speed.

NO ONE DOES EVEN 120 km/h ON THE HIGHWAYS, ITS WELL OVER 130km/h
>>
>>13874051
>highway speed is 80kmh
>Very long straight in the middle of nowhere
>everyone goes 120+

>>
>>13873282

>>
>>13867927
see: snowcrash
>>
>>13874027
This, mostly.

I'm using one from the Co-operators right now. 5% discount for using it at all, and at the end of 6 months they look over the driving record and adjust my rate. Right now it SAYS I'm to get a 25% reduction.

Live in the city, so total miles are low. Also rarely drive between midnight and 4am or whatever because I'm not a pleb with a shitty job. Stoplights and merging do mean that accel and braking are frequent "events", but generally you can do a few of these events per trip and maintain a good standing. It's based on events/mile, so a bit of highway driving will negate the city basically.

All in all, it's made me a worse driver. I end up cutting people off because I don't accelerate fast enough and I run every other yellow light. But hey, if I get 25% off, fuck you public.

Also have removed it a few times for "car maintenance" aka because I wanted to drive like an idiot for a couple of trips down some twisty roads.

They do not care about speeding, they do not care about g-forces. Also they can NOT raise my rate based on the data, only lower it. Right in the literature. The rest of you users are getting keked.

>All in all, it's made me a worse driver. I end up cutting people off because I don't accelerate fast enough and I run every other yellow light.
>Running yellow lights

This
so
fucking
much.

The damn things are stupidly sensitive. Anything short of just feathering the brakes causes it to make an obnoxious chime noise. Ironically the thing never checked speed, or acceleration, so I just started flooring it through every yellow light.

Only had the device for 2 months. Took the rest of the year to get back into sane driving habits. Oh well. My rate got cut by 33%.
>>
>>13877387
For me, the rate is capped at -25%. AFAIK they do up to:

10% for miles driven
10% for time of day driving
5% sudden braking (12km/s/s)
5% sudden acceleration (12km/s/s)

But cap it at 25%, not 30.

The only part that sucks is that if you're coming off a highway or something and hit a yellow light far away, but close enough to be sudden braking, it'll dock you several times for the one braking event. It measures every second, so if you're braking hard for 4 seconds straight, that's 4 events.

But with about 1 event every 10km, I have a "5 star" standing.. So they're not stupidly harsh about it.

I'd recommend it for anyone who doesn't NEED to hoon at every opportunity, and who lives outside of a city for the most part. Just make sure to check the fine print on what your specific company rates you on, and that your rates won't increase.

Mine doesn't beep or anything though. Nothing to indicate you just had a sudden event until you check your profile online.
