Hey guys, any stories about fucking up working on your cars?
I got one from today. So I've been changing out my timing chain over the last week on my Plymouth and just finished yesterday. And today I notice a huge oil leak coming out of the timing chain cover. Turns out the oil pan-timing chain gasket moved while I was putting the timing chain case back on and now it's all fucked up.

My options now are to basically do it all over again or loosen the oil pan and try to pull the gasket back where it needs to go and silicone gel it up like crazy.

Any one else got any fuck ups?
>>
>need to do an oil change
>take wrench
>take out spark plug
>spark plug shatters in hole
>jam wrench into spark plug
>pour oil in hole, cleans spark plug debri away
>open air filter box
>put in new filter for new oil
>take out wrench
>fill with silicon since I dont have another spark plug
>ohwell.mp3
>clean up, put exhaust back on

Never had a problem with the brakes since. Runs great. But I'm sad I broke the spark plug, but at least I learned for next time I have to change my wheel bearings.
>>
>>13846099
Sounds like you fucked up m8. Remember more power steering fluid on the battery cables next time
>>
>changed spark plugs successfully

Reminds me of the time I was retorqueing the subframe bolts on my strut towers
The damn clutch would not keep its fucking timing, I had to jam a screwdriver in the starter mount

yeah idk what it is but i guess i fucked up
>>

>Actually using a torque wrench on spark plugs
I bet you torque your wheels on to spec too, kek

are you too lazy to do it right?

Was it really a fuck up?

Id say it was a success

why would you ever not do it yourself?

Free service on anything tire related because I got a sweet warranty on my offroading tires from them.

They were my bitches until I moved away.

Using a torque wrench is fine as long as you account for the anti-seize compound
>>
>>13846858
good spark plugs don't require anti-seize
>>
>>13846865
This is also true. NGK master race

>week to do timing chain

Dude

>cover is leaking

I don't know about your vehicle but I can get the timing cover off of our frontier in 15 mins at a pace where I a lot time to take swigs of rum and that is also timing chain.

Well I have a pretty heavy schedule, full time student and full time job. And there is barely any workable daylight when I do have free time.
And my timing cover basically needs to have the radiator, water pump, alternater, and power steering pump taken off. It doesn't take much time but it's definitely an obstacle.

Also I'm not that good at this apparently
>>

Climbing around upside down in the footwell of a S2000 is a pain in the ass when you have a bad back.

>press the clutch
>it just fucking drops to the floor again
>check under car

Not my car - it came from the internet.

Rotors are wear items.
>>
>>13847496
fucking LOL you idiot

I say this as somebody who has also been burned by boiling coolant
>>
>>13847496
Reminds me of a girl that thought it would be a good idea to boil some water and then pour it on her ice covered wind screen. It was quite funny for the rest of us.
>>

Fuck. How does that even happen?
>>
>>13847513
dude what did you do to your rotors
>>
>>13847148
I told you this in another thread, why didn't you just go to the dealership for your car and get the trim clips?
>>
>>13846561
you might have put the top cap on facing in the wrong direction.
Im being completely serious.
If you changed out your strut, it's very possible you put it in wrong, as the top cap has to be facing the right way. Im not sure if it depends on the car but for mine the arrow on the top cap has to point towards the front of the car.
>>
>>13846841
I can tell you aren't a genius throughout your entire post, especially with how you spell brakes and the fact that you bother doing "work" on a datsun.
>>
Well. I checked my gaskets and it looks like I'll need to take the timing cover off to fix it. Hopefully the weather in western Wisconsin doesn't stay windy and gay all day
>>
>>13846867
Thanks NGK shiny threads.
>>13846759
>not putting it in from feel because you've done so many. For serious though, 12 in lbf is literally hardly past the seat if you have a taper plug and not a crush washer (aka don't get autolite and get literally any other plug).

I actually know a guy who locktites his brake component bolts...in the north east, where rust is a fairly serious problem.

I'm just hoping I never have to work on it.
>>
>refilling washer fluid

another one;
>radiator fan shroud is fucking rusty as hell

A Plymouth what?

I have never seen a timing cover where you had to remove all the accessories.

The accessory belts, the fan and maybe the rad yes. But you have a really poorly designed vehicle if you really have to remove all that.
>>
>>13853268

Is your name andrew?
>>
>>13853312
Its a 71 sport fury, with the 360
You have to remove the components because all of them bolt into the timing case to hold them into place. It's a hassle but last night I got it all off in about an hour. Would have been less time but I kept dropping shit into the pan with all of my coolant in it

Pour sand into engine to polish heads.
Car never ran better.

It was an oem bolt, never been removed before
That's what you get living in the salt belt and working on a 9 year old car
