I live in Colorado and want a 4wd truck (maybe SUV). I have a few things I need it to do:
>haul street bikes to the race track
>haul dirt bikes to the trails
>go off road for fun and to access hiking trails
Jeeps are super overpriced here. Japanese mini trucks are also stupid expensive. Japanese SUVs are also relatively overpriced.
This leaves three options:
>full sized pickup, preferably a Ford or Dodge because solid front axle
>domestic SUV like a Ford Exploder or Chevy S10 Blazer
>domestic mini truck, S-10 or Ranger
My main question is would a full sized truck be a terrible idea off road? It would be the most practical for moving motorcycles, but also horrible on gas.
Any input, what would you look for?

An early 90s ford with a straight 6 isn't too big, reliable, and capable of fun.
(PS. I hate ford) can't believe I'm recommending one.

Dang ol ranger seems to be the best choice s10s of any year are trash
Stay away from cologne engines they tend to have problems
I got the 3.0 Vulcan in mine and it may be a little under powered but it does fine off-road also get the 5 speed the Mazda trannys are weak slush boxes
Also stay away from the carbaretted rangers they tend to be a pain too

What's wrong with Ford?

So, a 3.0L and which transmission? They have 5 speed manuals (Mazda mad them) and also 5 speed autos. I was really hoping to get a manual.

Yes

The 3.0 is like power of a 4 banger with the fuel consumption of a 6 cylinder.
I'd recommend the 2.3l over the 3.0. But the 4.0 is a good engine too.

He meant the F150. Not the ranger
The f150 can't be that much wider than a ranger right?

Funny you should mention that today I installed butterfly doors onto my chevy. Cheers fard baby
There must be a reason why I'm not finding tons of pictures of older F150s off road.
