Hey /o/. I see a lot of threads about trucks and 4x4's but they all primarily focus on fuckhuge fullsize trucks. I'm in the market for a new 4 wheel drive mini truck, like the toyota pickup, s10, hardbody, etc. My current daily/weekend warrior is a tired rusty nissan 720 that has taken every bit of abuse I've given it in the woods and still gets me 40+miles every week day. I need some opinions on the most reliable little 4x4 truck, I've heard really good things about the pickup/hilux but they tend to be more expensive and a lot of them are beat to shit where I live. I'm inclined to stick with nissan since my current truck has served me well but there's less of them around. No experience with 4x4 rangers, s10s, or dakotas so any advice would be appreciated.

tl;dr What is the most reliable 4x4 mini truck for me to beat on out in the woods and still get me to work the next day

just take s10's and dakotas off of the list from the start. they wont take the abuse that you expect out of them after owning a nissan. the ranger is a great little truck, our 4x4 ranger work truck has 325k miles on the stock drivetrain, is overloaded daily and gets beat on pretty good without problems. the tacoma is probably the "best" but like you said, they are overpriced for what you are getting

They're pretty rare around where I live, even if I could find a 5 speed 4x4 I'd be in the same boat as the 720 with finding parts for it
>>
>>13844545
I find parts pretty easy for mine. But if your area is slim pickings then I wouldn't

What motor is in your ranger? I've had good experiences with the 8 plug 4 cyl but from what I've heard working in a shop the 3.0 4.0's aren't the most reliable

I see them around from time to time, but most of them are lowered 2wd minitruck style. I doubt I could find one in a junkyard very easily

its the 4.0L, we use it to take material from one plant to another (about 15 miles through the mountains) usually loaded down with anywhere from 500lbs to 1800lbs on some occasions and it does the trip between 2-5 times a day 5 days a week since 2004 with no issues other than eating brakes and a few rust holes

Now hold on a second
>s10
Didn't the S denote a RWD system while the K denoted a 4WD system? So an S10 would not be what you're looking for at all.
>>
>>13844746
nah, the K10 is a 4x4 full size pre-88 the c10 is a 2wd full size pre 88, the s10 comes in 2wd and 4x4 variations from 82-2005

I have an 88 s10 with 200k on the original engine drivetrain AND clutch. I assure you it was used hard as a truck and abused by my dad i'm talking oil changes every few years before I got it and it's fine. Plus parts are cheap as shit. I can rebuild the motor for 150 bucks, buy brake rotors for 10 bucks, radiators for 50 brand new etc... First gen (82-93) s10s are great trucks.

The thing about HiLuxes is that parts are easy to come by, they are renowned for their build quality and the aftermarket & community is huge as hell

If you to have even more fun you can do something like a dual-transfer case
