Does anyone here know anything about the Karmann Ghia? I've been told parts are easily found off of most VW stuff from back then, especially Beetles. Seeing a couple good examples under 5k, wondering if I should do it.

Whatever performance mods you can do to a Beetle, you can do to a Ghia. I've seen VW 1600 engines running 180 hp on a dyno before, or there's always the option of swapping in a Subie motor.

Ghia's are the shit. Any type 1 is. From 1950's-1966 ghia's have a 1200-1300cc engine that only makes about 40hp. After that they are bumped up to the 1600 rated around 60 on a good day out of the factory 45 years ago. Don't expect speed out of the box.

Parts are everywhere for type 1's. One of the absolute cheapest cars you can get parts for. Oem's are everywhere and repops are abundant. I have a 65 bug, a 71 squareback and a 63 ghia. Built the ghia with a 1776cc engine and it blasts. The cars are also extremely light so any performance mods you do , you will feel.

Thanks for this. I was expecting the slowness, and I might do a swap later on. It wouldn't be my only car obviously, just something pretty to cruise.

Would it be worth to swap with a newer beetle with more power? Or is it better to just do a bigger swap at that point?

I'm not doing an LS swap or something stupid, but 100-150 hp would be pretty cool.

I have 3, don't ouch a cheap one as you will be pouring money into it. Once rot sets in you have to replace a lot of expensive bits. The bodies were all hand made by traditional panel beaters so swapping doors bonnets and boots is not as simple as on a pressed mas production vehicle like a Capri or Mustang,

And different floor pans, different suspension, different brakes. there are surprisingly few parts that are actually type 1 on it. It shares a lot more with the Type 181 Kurierwagen.

if you get one with a 1200-1300cc engine you will need to do a few things. First of all these early ones are 6v. you will need to convert to 12v if you want to run anything with more than 36hp lol. The most common thing is to swap a common 1600dp in from the later years. (These are abundant as it's the same engine as 19667-on bugs use) this will make it drivable. Then you can either build an aircooled block, swap a corvair engine in, or subaru. These can all be mated to the ghia trans with little stress. I've done aircooled builds and subaru swaps so I can attest to those. The easiest one to do is build a 2110cc stroker aircooled block. That will easily reach you 150hp .

Right now I have a 1776cc block in my ghia (slight bore) w110 cam, dual karons, 8:1 compression and I'm pushing 100hp on a very budget build but it's extremely reliable.
