/o/ I am not a car savvy guy. My cousin's car has been making a SCRUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNCHHHH noise when she brakes and I'm assuming it's either the brake pads or brake fluid but I honestly don't know. Is it possible to get a mechanic to do a free quote or do they not do that?
>>
Its the pads, they're worn so much they're grinding the rotor.
>>
Some do free quotes if it's a simple problem to see.

If I were home I could give you a guide on how to check brake pad life.

It's most likely either
A) a stone stuck in the calliper
B) brake pad wear indicators.

They're not expensive to fix, are they? I have heard quite a bit of mechanics fucking people over on otherwise cheap processes.

Call up a workshop and ask if they can give do a free check and give you a quote on the eventual job

And hell, its not hard to check yourself;
>fluid
Check the reservoir to see if the fluid is between the min and max markings
>brakes
Remove the wheel and look at the pads and rotors to see if its metal on metal
Drum brakes are a bit worse to look at for a beginner as you'll have to remove the drum itself to check the brakeshoes, but you'll figure out how when you look at the drum brake (if your cousins car has drum brakes at all, in which case they will most likely be at the rear only unless your cousin drives a quite old car)

Have fun

shit I've never done that before but it could be an experience

toyota corolla, hand-me-down from nan who only took it out on Sundays etc etc for about 10 years

uhhhh disc brakes I believe? I can see some sort of brake mechanism through the hubcap

I believe it's a 90s model knowing how long nan had the car

that's just a stock photo off the internet btw, actual car is at cousin's house right now so i can't take a photo

Get your shit straight before you come on here asking for help.

If the car is the same as the pictured one, it's gonna have front discs and rear drums.

I'm guessing that either she hasn't had that shit looked at in forever and the pads are worn like >>13829681 says, or there's a rock or some shit in there grinding.

Get a Chilton manual and spend an afternoon pulling that shit apart and putting it back together.

all i really wanted to know was whether mechanics did free quotes/identification and I've got my answer, google was pretty nebulous on that, so I'm quite grateful and everything else is pretty much just bonus

but i think i will take a look at it on the inside, don't wanna fuck up my cousin's car though
>>
>>13829820
Its impossible to fuck up removing wheels and changing break pads unless you are literally retarded. Also, quotes will almost always cost you money at a mechanic.

This is why most people are retards when it comes to cars. They are too irrationally afraid or breaking something to even try.

Are you really so autistic that you've never met a normie before?

No offense to op but I can imagine some fat 300 pound mlp neckbeard coming into a mechanics shop somewhere in the Midwest and mumbling about "muh breaks... Mud fluid" and the mechanic charging your Autismo ass $600 bucks for a break job.

nah, I'm 85kg and don't want to get Jewed, so I came to /o/ to get the word on the street

I'm giving removal a try tomorrow, thanks all anons who helped
>>
>>13829692
If you DIY, it'll be like $25 for the pads alone. Compared to $500 at your local ShekelMechanics
