I have never owned a car before. I think this one is pretty great:

http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/cto/5275633706.html

All of my friends think its great too, including a few that actually know stuff about cars. My mom and all of her adult friends think I should blow my 5k in savings and take out an auto loan to get a $10,000 car with very few miles and a newer year. Are they an idiot, or am I? Pic related.

Low. Every Toyota/Honda here in SoCal is at least 220k with a salvage title.

No. Keep looking, any car with 200k+ miles is at least worth 1-1.2k at best.
>>
>>13817153
I'm the guy that was looking at the Celica. Around how much mileage is too much? Just so I know where not to waste my time.
>>
>>13817222
it depends, dingus. if you are buying a project it doesn't matter. if you're going to be using it for work and need it to be bulletproof, you want lower miles.

but honestly, if you want a reliable DD you should be looking for something less than 10 years old and less than 120k miles. the odds of it having been hellishly neglected are lower, mother nature and father time will have done less damage, and you can still find a good car for $2 to 4k.

if you've just got to have a celica, you might have to raise the mileage up. but don't buy a car with 250k miles unless you know what you're doing, because the odds are it will have a tired engine and the transmission may only be limping along.

Why is everyone on /o/ so poor?
>>
>>13817337
I don't like spending much on cars.
I like fixing them or taking them to TJ to fix them on the cheap.
I tend to actually use my car so a slightly used car is a better option in my opinion.

I love that generation Sentra, good handling for what they are. They rust out really bad though. Surprised to see one looking that clean in the Northeast.
Corolla is always a safe bet for reliability if it hasn't been abused.

I'd say test drive both. Carefully inspect them, and choose whichever is in better condition.

>>13814208
Eh, looks okay. Try to knock him down a bit more for the damage. Body damage is concerning, only buy it if you can have a mechanic or body shop verify it's straight.
>>13817222 They'll run forever, there isn't really a set too much, it's really about condition. I've got a MR2 with the same engine as that with 218k miles on it. If you do buy something that high mileage follow the service schedule to the letter. Also do all the service items when you get it, unless you're provided proof they've been done recently.

>>13814400 >>13814410
I like it. Looks like it was well taken care of.
I know those Saabs do have one fatal flaw. Something with a weak spot on the firewall/bulkhead buckling. There's a fix that some Saab specialty shops sell reinforcement brackets for. If you can find a Saab specialist to inspect the car that'd be worthwhile. If not research the issue I mentioned on Saab forums so you know what to look for.

>>13814992
I like it, but have your wits about you. Get it inspected. Get proof of that "recent tune up." See my advice above about owning high mileage cars. This will be perfect to learn basic maintenance stuff on. These are reliable, and high mileage isn't the death toll it used to be on pre-80s cars. Might try beating them down on the price a bit.

I think you're the smart one for buying a car that you can afford in cash. These are new enough that you'll be still able to find parts. It's cheap enough to be disposable if you wreck it.

If you want to get ahead in life do not get into debt, especially for a car. The more payments you have the more screwed you are if you loose your job, want to move, etc.

>>13817402
He can get something better for the same price though. I just looked through his craigslist and found a Toyota Echo with lower mileage and a manual trans for $200 burger coins less.
>>
>>13817420
Still depends on condition. I've seen "lower mileage" cars that have been beat to shit and utterly neglected.

My MR2s are a good example. First one was in horrendous shape with ~120k miles. Current one I paid more for, but in excellent shape with ~115k miles.
>>
>>13817463
220k is still too high regardless of condition.
>>
>>13817402
>I like it. Looks like it was well taken care of.
Awesome, the only issue is it list a Ohio area code phone no and the pics have a non-california plate although the ad states registered in Cali.
Seems odd.

I have no idea what's going on here
>>
>>13817472
That's your opinion. I think it can be fine to daily a high mileage car if the condition is good and the factory recommended service schedule is followed.

Just have a backup plan for getting to work and have an emergency fund of cash set aside for unplanned repairs or possibly replacing the car. Everyone should have an emergency fund anyways. Even new cars break down.

>>13817480
Yeah, be careful. Seems like the car could belong to someone that moved from out of state. If the seller sounds fishy though pass and find something else. Still seems worth a call.

>>13817617
Some idiot started an engine swap and didn't finish. Avoid it unless you're bored and want a major project. You'll probably need to go through the car top to bottom to make sure it's done right.
