Gunnar Ebbesson is used to paying a lot for health insurance, but the small business owner from Fairbanks got a shock recently when his quote came in for next year's coverage.

"I don't understand who can afford this," he says. "I mean, who really can afford this? I can pay it, but I can't afford it."

The premium for his family of five came to more than $40,000 a year. That's for a bare-bones plan with a $10,000 deductible — the plan that's through the marketplace set up by the Affordable Care Act.

>The premium for his family of five came to more than $40,000 a year. That's for a bare-bones plan with a $10,000 deductible

Holy fuck.

1.) That is expensive as hell.
2.) That is more than most people in my province pay in total income taxes in a year, and our income taxes cover everything from health care to policing, education, etc.
3.) I want to say he'd be better off just not having health insurance for 1 or 2 years, and investing that money instead, but if even one of his kids gets sick with something minor it'd probably cost 20-40 grand.

America is kind of fucked, to be honest. I bitch about our gun laws in Canada, our bleeding heart bullshit tax-wasting politicians, and the increasing cost of tuition....but America is fucked when it comes to paying for healthcare and education.
>>
>>13812330
There is also a fee if you don't have insurance.
>>
>>13812309

So rather than regular, intelligent people managing their money so as to afford reasonable health insurance...they are now forced to buy it. But because everyone is now forced to buy it, there will be a greater draw on these resources, meaning companies have increased rates to compensate for Bubba's triple heart transplants, Tyrone's repeated gunshot wounds, and Fabio's monthly prolapse repairs.

Now, instead of having reasonably affordable health insurance for people who manage their finances properly, they are bent over and fucked so irresponsible fucks can have coverage too.

America isn't a socialist country, this shit is sure to be a massive failure for you guys. You're not set up to have that kind of nanny-ism. Fucking Obama, what a clown.

So how does that work? Like, if you go to the hospital and don't have insurance, they charge you for the services AND another fee for not having insurance? I don't understand why they didn't just leave this whole thing alone. If you don't have health insurance, that sucks for you.

Does Ford intentionally change the front end of their trucks every so often, so as to make the previous generation look noticeably older and dated? I feel like they try to shame/guilt people into buying the most recent model, because style-wise it's noticeably different. Like when they did the change in 1997, and again in 2004. Anyone I see driving a 1997-2004 I automatically think "wow, he fucked up in life".

Looks like a max of $2700 according to the page I'm looking at.

My dad retired and he's been looking for a new plan (since their current insurance provider is folding) and they're looking at about $1100/mo just to get a deductible under $10000, and that's not even the max OOP. It's a total clusterfuck for people above the poverty line shopping for insurance independently, not to mention destroying any private practice healthcare and small private healthcare providers that would actually provide healthcare at a reasonable cost.

>$10,000 deductible

Canadian here, holy mother of fuck. If I get sick, break my leg, need surgery, etc. I just go to the doctor or hospital. Don't even think about it. The only stuff we pay for are ambulance rides (if we don't have insurance), and non-essential prescriptions (i.e. some skin care product, Hep B vaccine, etc.).

I was in between school and working for a little while, didn't have insurance. Had to get some minor dental work done, holy fuck. $300 just to get a chip on a tooth repaired. I can't even imagine how fucked it is for people who need braces and shit, and don't have insurance. I wish our health care covered dental and eye stuff too. I guess the government figures we just need organs and bones to live, not eyes or teeth.

Oh but trannies can get subsidized surgery to have their dicks chopped off and start hormone therapy. That's considered necessary by our provincial government. But not dental. Or eyecare.

If you are literally dying they will do what they need to, but will charge you 100% for it. That includes about $2k for just staying in the hospital overnight [depends on what state you live in]. It's a similar fucking if you end up at an out-of-network provider even if you do have insurance.

That's how it works when you have decent insurance. If you're unemployed, self-employed, retired, or otherwise shopping for your own insurance and make enough money to not qualify for ACA subsidies, your options for insurance are absolute shit.

>>13812553
>How can they refuse to help you if you need medical attention?
Private hospitals can refuse non-essential treatment. Publicly funded hospitals have to accept you. All hospitals will accept you for emergency stuff.

>>13812556
>According to the bills I get from my insurance company they are. It'l have the "billable amount" then the "discount" I get for having insurance, then the actual amount billed.
It's really not that simple. In a really, really small nutshell, a hospital will send an insurance company a bill for some retardedly high amount. This is referred to as "gross billing." The insurance company will say "we'll give you this much." There may or may not be some negotiation, and the insurance company pays the hospital some amount lower than the gross billing. As an individual without insurance, the hospital will send you a bill at the gross amount, which you have the freedom to negotiate.

Yeah the only dental/eye stuff that the government will cover is absolute emergency-tier shit. Friend of mine didn't have very good coverage through his work, but ended up with a fucked up molar. Went to the dentist, was told that they couldn't bill the government unless it was infected and posed a higher risk. He basically had to wait 4 days before a minor infection started, then went to emergency and they scheduled him to have it removed the next morning.

How fucked.

>>
>>13812637
>How the fuck do they not just have a set price for something
It's because insurance companies want to pay as little as possible. They balance what they're willing to reimburse with how valuable it is for them to have that healthcare system in their network. As long as you have insurance and hit your max OOP amount, you will never see this process. In fact, these negotiations are totally private and healthcare providers don't know what an insurance company reimburses another provider for the same service. It's shady shit. Gross billing amounts have very little reflection on what the services actually cost, they're more like a starting point for the haggling.

Of course if you're not savvy to medical billing and you find yourself with a bill and no insurance, you'll get taken for a fucking ride. It doesn't actually cost $10,000 for a basic MRI even though that's what a large healthcare system will try to charge you.

>Someone needs to be a whistle blower. Blow this shit wide open. Blow some whistles or something.
It's not a secret. It's just not something people care to learn. They'd rather blame doctors for being greedy, even though the doctors get fucked by the system every day. The only organizations/people that don't get fucked are the large healthcare providers (like large university hospital systems) and insurance companies. Insurance collects fat ass premiums with deductibles so high that nobody will meet them, so insurance doesn't pay for the healthcare. The large healthcare providers charge whatever the fuck they want for any given service, and the get (relatively) fat reimbursements from the insurance companies because the insurance companies want to be able to tell their customers that the Big Brand Name Hospital System is in their network.

Healthcare insurance in the US has needed a massive reform for a long time, but everything that has happened in the past 10-15 years to try to regulate or change it has made it way, way worse for private/small providers, employees, and patients alike. I'm inclined to say that most of these changes (especially the ACA) have been intended to crash the system, but maybe Hanlon's razor is at play here.
